Wade Miller Signs with Red Sox

Wade Miller was signed to a one-year deal by the Red Sox today worth up to 4.5 million dollars after passing a team physical.

I think this is a great signing by Epstein and the Red Sox front office. It's a signing that is relatively low risk because if he doesn't work out the Red Sox don't stand to lose a whole lot. If he can come back from his rotator cuff injury as good as he once was then he's a huge bargain for the Red Sox who stand to be without Curt Schilling for April (his fill-in would have been John Halama). This also just adds some more depth to the starting pitching whitch certainly could use some.

DAMNIT JP WHAT ARE YOU DOING!

Last night I heard from someone from ESPN on the radio saying the Jays might take a look at Miller and I thought that that would be a good signing for the Jays. Obviously it's not going to happen.

Anyways this is a nifty move by the Sox and as you've said it's low risk. Most guys who come off of rotator cuff surgery and such take about half a year to get back to form. Eh well....

Did he end up having surgery? ESPN doesn't say and I don't remember being a fan of an AL team I wasn't connected to the Wade Miller story. He hasn't pitched since July so he's had a lot of time heal. Still, it was Miller's agent who said he expects him to be ready for opening day, so that could easily mean he's out until the All-Star Break.

I think this is a very good pickup for the Red Sox. Miller has very good stuff and has had some good seasons in the past. The Sox aren't paying him that much and he could win 13-17 games for them IMO.

                Lifetime:

                W: 58
                L: 39
                ERA: 4.48
                IP: 768
                K: 659
                B: 306
                H: 699

Pretty good WHIP numbers which is always a telling sign for any pitcher.

Great job by the Sox in adding some quality depth to their rotation for a bargain price. This gives them 7 pitchers who can start, Schilling, Wells, Clement, Arroyo, Wakefield, Miller and Halama. Not the most talented rotation but with this depth they should be able to figure out a solid starting 5 during the season. Now if they would just resign Tek...

Darn. I was hoping the Braves would take a look at Miller on a similar deal, and then try to trade Hampton. Like was said, that's a low risk deal he signed. Good job by the Sox.

                            The Sox keep making moves.

They may even be better in 2005 than 2004.
