I wouldn't use flop in baseball. The term applies more for soccer, basketball and hockey.

    Sell job is better term.

How do you sell anything when he was on defense?

Nice play by LeMahieu at 3rd for the double play.

I don't know if it was David Cone or who, but somebody just asked: "How often does it happen that you make a great play in the field, and you get to come up and hit the next inning? It's more than just a coincidence." Okay, I know we all say this, but we have to nip this in the bud.

For starters, the person they're referring to (LeMaihieu) was due up fifth in that inning, so it's more than just a 33.3% chance since you can have more than just the first three hitters come up in the inning, so automatically it's already a really high percentage anyway.

Secondly, we only care to pay attention to it when that player comes up. Let's watch the next time somebody makes a great play and doesn't come up the next inning, and determine whether or not you think that entered a single individual's consciousness as that happened. So as far as I'm concerned, it happens 100% of the time that we think about it, because we only think about it when they person actually happens to come up to bat.

Sorry, filling the air right now lol.

No. Framing is flopping. Let's call it what it is. You're acting to get a call. Flopper.

It's long past time we kill this. It's shameful. It's fake. It's ****ting on legitimacy.

In that case, players do that everywhere. Raising their glove with a trap, calling themselves safe as they're running through first base, holding their bat back after a check swing as if to say "This is where I had it," starting their trek for a walk on borderline pitches, etc.

I'm not calling it flop or not flop, but whatever it's called is not uncommon in this sport, that's for sure. I don't know how the umpire can't see where the ball passes, anyway. I've been umpiring for eighteen years (honestly no more behind the plate since my concussion), and framing catchers are simply wasting their time and energy with me back there.

That being said, I teach my catchers how to frame because a lot of umpires are impressionable.

Just narratives, in time most of this kind of thinking will be gone from the broadcast booth and it can't come soon enough for my taste.

Who said I'm encouraging it? Because I teach my catchers to cater to umpires' stupidity?

I should be a little better with what I meant. I don't necessarily teach framing, but I teach them to work on not moving their body or dragging their glove outside of the strike zone as they're catching a ball. Framing? Nah, just stiffening their glove on the catch. Also not to turn the glove around on a low ball unless you have to.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of the automatic walk either (as you know that is an understatement), but you think I'm going to have my catcher stand up for four wide ones when the other option is available? How does that help my team?

Oh well that's different. Teaching them to hold their position is different than teaching them to actually move their glove and act like they caught it in a place that they didn't in an attempt to act for a call.

Let's call it what it really is.... a venial sin.

Anywho..... hoping Nick Pivetta being given the #2 slot is gonna usher in his new era to which he promptly gives up a triple and an RBI already.

Said they should've gotten serious about Keuchel. (which is more about V. Velasquez than Pivetta)

Correct, I do not teach actual framing.

However, I teach all players to "internalize" their catches. A lot of young players tend to stab at the ball, doing what I mentioned before with catchers. Instead, I have them work on their transfers every time they warm up, and it starts from the way that they receive it. Again, this isn't just catchers. This is just every player.
