Looks like it's going to be: scratch and claw in a nice back and forth game with your backup catcher hitting 2 HRs for the first time in his career while your starting catcher seemingly saves the game from RF, only to see your new "elite closer" blow it in the 9th.

Eh, if we don't have the nominal catcher playing RF in the 9th inning of a 1-run game and if Russell doesn't make a bonehead decision with where to throw the ball...I can't put too much of it on Kimbrel even if he's not missing many bats just yet.

Eh, if we don't have the nominal catcher playing RF in the 9th inning of a 1-run game and if Russell doesn't make a bonehead decision with where to throw the ball...I can't put too much of it on Kimbrel even if he's not missing many bats just yet.

Ball in RF had a 40% catch chance.. I'm not sure Heyward makes that play either as Willie is faster. Anyway, that was the point of signing Kimbrel; to miss bats.

And yes Russell is a ****ing moron.

And he's been so hot lately but if your convinced you can get him out and don't want to walk him I can get behind that but you would have to play the infield in.

Heyward wasn't available so I'm fine with Willson still in the OF. Kimbrel was fine btw he didn't have his A stuff but 2 Errors and 2 softly fly balls.

I'm guessing Maddon didn't walk the bases because Marte is incredibly hard to double up.

What the heck was Addison doing with the infield back especially with his arm just get the out. Worse case they go to extras there. among the worst losses of the season.

This is worst than 2017 right now near the break.

And you're not necessarily looking for a double play by loading the bases. Just turns the out at the plate into an easier play by making it a force instead of a tag. The guy is out on Russell's throw if it's a force.

Frazier is far and away the Pirates hottest hitter. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not someone who buys into taking streaks as a reason to change your strategy.

Marte isn't a huge ground ball hitter though. I would still walk Frazier and still play the infield middle in.

You still keep the option for a DP or a throw to the plate.


The way he played just doesn't make sense.

Pretty clear the Cubs aren't playing well and that Joe Maddon's job security will become a 'thing' even if only to say that he doesn't get extended. But, one thing I would like and wouldn't cost much is a stellar defense-first catcher. I think we've really missed the presence of David Ross being Lester's personal caddy and someone who can call a good game. I'd sacrifice Caratini or Contreras a couple of times per week if the Cubs can plug in a catcher that can get something out of Darvish and more consistency out of the other high-dollar starting pitchers.
