    What happened to the Tigers?

With the lockout going on Illitch was going to invest more on his baseball team and all I see so far is Pervical.

I know they bid on Koskie, Pavano, Drew, Glaus, and Lowe and lost out on all of them. I've even heard rumblings they offered a bigger contract than the Dodgers for Lowe (already a crazy amount at 36mil/4yrs) and he turned them down.

It's a troublesome sign when you're willing to overpay for players and yet they still don't want to join your club.

If the Tigers even wanna get a sniff at the divsion crown they need at least another power bat and a top of the rotation starter.

You're a Tiger fan in addition to liking the majority of the AL East?
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

while annoyed, I think Dave Dombrowski made the right decision....I'm not sure I'd have wanted to pay what the guys we were chasing the amount they ended up getting. Don't want to get stuck with a huge contract that doesn't work out (we've been there more than enough)

I do wish they'd gotten more than just percival though, we need some help

Supposedly the Tigers are pursuing Magglio Ordonez, we'll have to see how that pans out. I think the problem for the Tigers is that they have been a bad team for so long that no one wants to sign there. It's pretty sad that it's taken an NHL lockout to even get Illitch interested in spending money on the Tigers. For the Tigers to be competitive they are likely going to have to go the same route as the Twins and develope their own players.

Re: What happened to the Tigers?

If they can't get Mags or Delgado I want them to at LEAST Pick up Sele of those good pitchers left, because he's the best of them IMO and would possibly come cheap. I know it sounds insane but I STILL think Sele shows promise. Then get Olerud to back up Pena, and honestly if they can't get Maggs from this "supposedly"? Then they can kiss their power options goodbye, because Delgado, Fullmer, Gonzalez, Batista, ALL are questionable as to how they will do next year. The only guy who MIGHT have a chance at providing them power, BURNITZ, is an Outfielder, and they are absolutely positively CHOCK FULL OF OUTFIELDERS!

If you ask me, if the Tigers can't get Maggs they need to do some SERIOUS rethinking on how they're approaching things, and then some SERIOUS trading.

Here's my take on the Tig's

                        1) They built their 1984 championship team from their farm system. They have since tried to do the same thing, but they've failed because Dombrowski is a moron. They'll get some good prospects, raise them, get em to the bigs and then trade em away for losers.

                        2) Nobody wants to live in Detroit or the Detroit area if they don't have to. I lived there for 25 years, but the second I got out of graduate school it was hello sunshine in the south, no more lousy weather winters that last 8 months.

                        3) Percival was a dumb move no matter what anyone says. They paid him more than Yan got! So...really they could have given Yan what he wanted and kept a known quantitiy. Percival is an injury risk and he's old.

                        4) Did I mention Dombrowski is a moron?

                        5) People have forgotten that the Tigers used to be one of the premier teams in baseball history. They were a franchise that was CONSISTENTLY contending. After 1987 they were a joke and 1993 was the dead last date they had any respect by anyone. It's going to take quite a bit of time to rekindle that flame with fans, players in the league, and baseball agents.

                        6) Money isn't everything. Look at the Lions....They have consistently paid at or above league averages for players and they haven't done squat. They have the highest paid Coach / GM combo in the NFL. It's all about talent something that Tigers (and Lions) need to get a better eye for.

                        What would save the Tigers?

1 - Sucking more. Yes....sucking more. Restock the farm system with hot prospects like Tampa Bay has done.

2 - When that talent matures...pay to keep them. Don't squander away your future for moronic trades like Tony Clark...

3 - Hire better scouts who know what talent looks like.

4 - Get rid of Dombrowski.

5 - Get rid of the "Bless You Boys" coaching staff and bring in real managers and coaches.
