He definitley should be. Here is how Larkin ranks against Hall of Famers, who played more games at SS than any other position. I also included potential Hall of Famers.
    Code:
    [u]Wins Above Replacement[/u]
    Honus Wagner 180.7
    Cal Ripken, Jr. 162.5
    Robin Yount 129.5
    Ozzie Smith 127.7
    Arky Vaughan 118.8
    [B]Barry Larkin 116.8[/b]
    Luke Appling 116.4
    George Davis 111.3
    Bobby Wallace 106.8
    Alex Rodriguez 104.9
    Joe Cronin 104.8
    Lou Boudreau 101.4
    Pee Wee Reese 96.6
    Luis Aparicio 90.7
    R. Maranville 88.7
    Joe Sewell 87.1
    John Ward 78.0
    Phil Rizzuto 73.6
    Joe Tinker 72.6
    Derek Jeter 68.1
    Hughie Jennings 66.2
    N. Garciaparra 61.5
    Travis Jackson 57.1
    Code:
    [u]Wins Above Replacement/162 Games[/u]
    Alex Rodriguez 11.9
    Arky Vaughn 10.6
    Honus Wagner 10.5
    Lou Boudreau 10.0
    Nomar Garciaparra 9.9
    Cal Ripken, Jr. 8.8
    [B]Barry Larkin 8.7[/b]
    Hughie Jenkins 8.3
    Derek Jeter 8.1
    Joe Cronin 8.0
    Ozzie Smith 8.0
    Luke Appling 7.8
    George Davis 7.6
    Joe Sewell 7.4
    Bobby Wallace 7.3
    Robin Yount 7.3
    Pee Wee Reese 7.2
    Phil Rizzuto 7.2
    John Ward 6.9
    Joe Tinker 6.5
    Luis Aparicio 5.7
    Travis Jackson 5.6
    R. Maranville 5.4
There is no doubt that Larkin should get in.

Imagine if they kept some of those players and added some players to go with them, defensively they could have looked like:

        C Benito Santiago
        1B Fred McGriff
        2B Roberto Alomar
        SS Tony Fernandez
        3B Carlos Baerga
        LF John Kruk
        CF Tony Gwynn
        RF Joe Carter

They would have had speed, power, contact hitters, strong defense up the middle.
I don't think many teams would have wanted to face that lineup.
I believe that was when the Tom Werner era hit the Padres. The only trade that was good for the Padres was the one for Hoffman... everything else, pretty much sucked.

I haven't seen much of Larkin because he was in the NL and I'm a Boston fan, but just by looking at the numbers I'd say he's good enough to get my vote. The only knock I can put on him is his durability which might prevent him from getting in on the first ballot, but I think he'll get enough support to make it eventually.
You're right, Misfit. I think he was 30-30 in 1996. So, he definitely fit in there. Durability late in his career hurts his chances but I think he did enough to get in.

Re: Is Barry Larkin a HoFer?

Since Ozzie is in, and I think Jeter will one day be in, I'm pretty much left saying that Larkin should be in, as well. Honestly, after seeing him play hundreds of games throughout his career, there was never anything in the world that made me say "wow, he's going to be in the Hall someday" -- think what Simmons said about Jack Morris -- but based on the standard I'm setting, I guess I would have to vote for him.
