I don't think you will see any small market team sign any player to a long-term 17 mil a year contract.
Excellent job of missing my point.

You said there would be huge public demand if they traded Sweeney for the club to go out and use the money they are saving by not having his $11M salary on their payroll. Well, look how much money they saved from not going after Beltran and shipping him off to Houston last year. And did they even make a single move this off-season? Certainly not that I know of. Granted, they were paying him around $10M last year, between Sweeney and Beltran, that probably made up about half of their entire payroll for the past couple seasons. But, still, they continue to sit on the money. Opting instead to throw money at the likes of Juan Gonzalez. So, even if they free up the $30M or so they owe Sweeney over the next three seasons, along with whatever he ends up going for -- which I think will be far less, given he's only played over 150 games twice -- don't kid yourself by thinking the KC management would actually utilize those funds.

Well to be fair they did use some of Beltran's savings to resign Matt Stairs and sign Jose Lima.

I'm sure Royal fans are hoping the Beltran money is being earmarked for DeJesus and Grienke if they chose to buy out some of their abitration years.
