Didn't take long for Smotlz to complain about something, apparently hitters should change their approach at the plate because going for homers makes you less likely to check your swing.

The way the Mets are playing Washington will be in first place by the weekend. At least we get seven games in a row vs the Pirates in mid July.

Red Sox with another comeback, this time from down 5-1 to win 6-5.

The team is just so much better with Alex Cora in charge.

It always amazes me when I see a manager come in and turn things around immediately like Cora. I feel like managers don’t really have that big of an impact as long as they can avoid mismanaging the bullpen, so when I see guys turn things around the way Cora and Francona do it impresses me.

Players that have been around since 2018, hell even last year, constantly talk about how when Cora's there everyone has a good time, it's a super relaxed clubhouse, stuff like that.

With Roenicke last year, they say nobody was having fun, which resulted in ****ty play on the field, which resulted in less fun, etc.

Even going back to the year before Cora, in 2017. Players that were around then talk about how dreadful of an environment the team had with Jon Farrell in charge. And they had just won the division for the second straight year!

That's certainly one way to spin it, but I don't think he meant that at all and I think you know that. Players are swinging for the fences more. The harder you swing then the harder it is to hold up and check your swing. He isn't wrong in the least bit. We're also seeing players strikeout more as their approach at the plate has changed over the years. It's home run or bust for many players these days at the plate. That's no secret.

Smoltz isn't wrong in saying the modern approach of swinging harder and trying to get a HR every AB is making it to where guys check their swings less successfully. It's common sense. The harder you swing the harder it is to hold up when you want/need to.

Then I guess it is a good thing I didn't say that.

 Scoring runs (and preventing runs) is the name of game, and the more homers you hit, the more runs you score. You optimize your approach at the plate to get as much homers as you can while balancing that with your on-base percentage. So again, who cares about check swings, that's my point.
