I must've been a bit more optimistic than you in the preseason. I expected closer to .500 and see this bunch as underachieving (injuries haven't helped). If we were entering a bonafide rebuild, the contracts for Marcus Stroman and Seiya Suzuki don't make any sense. I can understand the shorter deals for Wade Mileys and so forth with an intent to flip them, but it almost seems like the front office isn't sure what we should be doing, or they are trying to point in one direction (these free agents, see we are trying tho) while doing something off camera (we suck and are rebuilding again, but keep selling out Wrigley so Ricketts doesn't fire the lot of us).The drop-off for Hendricks has been weird, but other than that it's hard for me to put much blame on the coaches. There's just a serious lack of talent on the MLB roster, especially on the pitching staff. They've managed to get some great production (relatively speaking) out of historically bad players. I credit that to the coaching/development staff. No one expected the team to be good this year though.
The return on the inevitable Contreras trade needs to be great. The injury to Brennan Davis sucks, him and Morel would be a fun reason to watch the road to 100 Ls. Hopefully Killian gets to just stay up and keep pitching. Maybe some young arms can come up and replace these vets in the bullpen that aren't doing much.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: 6/13/2022 - 6/26/2022 Game Discussion Thread
I literally haven't watched a second of any game during this 14 win streak. They never could win more than 2 straight when I was watching. Then they finally won 3 in a row for the first time and I didn't catch any of it, so I decided I wasn't going to watch until they lose again. Here we are at 14.
Is there a number it gets to where I have to break that promise and watch? I just know if I tune into a game right now, they'd lose it.

I never thought the Suzuki and Stroman contacts were for this season. I thought they were hoping to contend next year when some of the talent in the minors would be ready. Let Suzuki figure out MLB pitching this year, let Stroman get the first year Chicago pressure out of his system and hope they can make a run in 23.I must've been a bit more optimistic than you in the preseason. I see where you're coming from, but to me if Hoyer's thought was paying Stroman $25M this season to "get comfortable" in Chicago, then Jed should be fired first thing tomorrow morning. That doesn't track for me, to give a pitcher a 3-year deal at 20+ AAV to just burn one of those years where you have no intention of contending. Maybe I'd buy that line of thought for Suzuki? Just because he's a bit younger and it's a longer contract, with a bigger adjustment.I never thought the Suzuki and Stroman contacts were for this season. How stupid/smart Hoyer ends up looking will depend a lot on what we do with Willson Contreras. If he signs a monster extension, then I'd be more apt to agree with your view of what's happening. If we end up hanging onto him only to deal him midseason as an impending FA (value will be at rock bottom compared to last season or this past offseason), then that'd be another nail in Hoyer's coffin.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

That's a good point. I might be giving too much of my thought process on how Darvish struggled his first season and that playing a role in their decision making.I see where you're coming from, but to me if Hoyer's thought was paying Stroman $25M this season to "get comfortable" in Chicago, then Jed should be fired first thing tomorrow morning. Whatever the process is, it sucks right now. The farm system isn't as exciting as it was in 2013, the really good players are hurt or too far away to know if they'll be good or not. And the mlb team is awful quality

But what wouldn't suck is snapping a 10-game losing streak against a team on a 14-game winning streak...David Robertson going to work and things getting messy in the 9th.
2 BBs and a HBP so far to load the bases...this would be a pretty bad time for a blown save.
EDIT: Cubs escape. Winning streak starts today for the Cubbies.Last edited by WaitTilNextYear; 06-17-2022, 04:05 PM.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

This was such a predictable loss. Cubs had lost 10 straight. Braves had won 14 straight. That was a perfect recipe for both streaks to snap.
At least I can watch again.
