Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Tim Hudson and the Braves are close to finalizing a contract extension to keep the pitcher in Atlanta at least through 2008.
"A lot of the hard stuff's out of the way," said Hudson, who had given a March 1 deadline to get a deal done or else he'd end negotiations and test free agency next winter.
The former Oakland 20-game winner likely would get a three-year deal worth more than $11 million annually, plus at least two vesting option years tied to innings pitched, a source familiar with the negotiations said.
The contract is expected to be completed before the Tuesday deadline, and the Braves would secure the long-term services of a 29-year-old with a 92-39 record and the third-best winning percentage (.702) since 1900.
