Padres GM even knew...
I don't have many details yet, but ESPN The Magazine (should be out this week) will have a story about Kevin Towers suspecting Ken Caminiti was using steroids during his MVP campaign. He didn't say anything in order to help the organization and his own career. There is a short overview of the article on the ESPN website, however, you need to be an insider to read all of it. Or just wait for the magazine. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this article... seems interesting. Your thoughts...

Re: Padres GM even knew...
Sadly this seems to be the case with just about every executive in MLB. It seems to me that most of the people involved in the game are weak and easily manipulated. It's sad that things have come to this where an executive goes along with his star player abusing his body and shortening his life just so he (the executive) can climb up the ladder.
In many ways I think this is the saddest of all baseball scandals.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Padres GM even knew...
On Cold Pizza this morning they asked Steve Phillps about this and he said Kevin is correct. That every GM knew some people were on Roids, but with the testing that was in place, and trying to win kept them from doing anything about it even if they wanted to. Sad Sad way Baseball headed.President of the Devils Den

Please, hes just saying he knew and contronted them so he doesnt look as bad in this himself. Its all about MONEY. ENTERTAINMENT=MONEY. Back in 82 Ozzie Smith types of players were what fans came to see. When the "Bash brothers" came to town people started getting woddys for the long ball. All of a sudden Ozzie Smith making a miracle play at short stop was not as popular as rocking a fastball 520 feet out of a staduim." ALL people associated directly with baseball have everything to gain from this. Players, Managers, coaches, trainers, Owners, the Commissioner. They all get a share of the pie when baseball is very appealing to fans. All they are doing now is shifting blame back and forth within the ranks...when in reality they are ALL to blame. Even players who werenton the juice. You dont play 162 games a year for years and years with other people and not have some good idea what they are up to. The juicers wont say cuz they are on the juice. The non-juicer wont say because they dont wanna be secretely blacklisted within the ranks of the entire Major Leage. The Coaches and Managers werent talking becuase they want to win to keep thier jobs. We have been in a time where making the playoffs 4 years in a row but not winning the world series can get you fired. They got families to feed and a lifestle they want to keep up as well. Owners knew and didnt say anything because 500foot shoots keep people coming to the ball parks. The Players Union knew, Owners Union knew. THEY ALL FREAKIN KNEW.
You ask a player who you suspect is on the juice..all hes gotta do is deny it. You ask a player who you DONT suspect about players that you do suspect and he keeps his mouth shut (the code), you ask a manager and he will tell you he cant watch all of his players all the time (cop out), you ask the Owners and they give you an excuse that says "we want them out of baseball but we have no power to do so". You ask the commissoner and he tells you "i cant do much of anything, the players union is too tough"..you ask the players union and they give you a run around as well. its all one big circle jerk and they all know it. As long as they all agree to shift blame amongst one another they can ride this gravy train into the ground.
What pisses me off themost is ALL of them take you and I, the fan and paying public of which without us buying thier hats, jerseys, tickets, endorsed products, etc would have nothing.
The bottom line is this. There is no excuse for it to have even come to this. its not rocket science. If they wanted to keep them out of baseball or bust players who used and ban themthey could..they dont want to. NONE of the groups want to cuz they ALL benefit from it. Its all one big body , i dont care what they tell you. its one big body all reaping the benefits with the illusion that they are seperate entities.Last edited by blackceasar; 03-02-2005, 05:11 PM.__________________________________________________ ____
