    RIP Rick Mahler.

I loved watching this guy pitch. To look at him you would never guess he was a professional athlete.

    RIP Rick.

Man, what a shock- he was only 51. The St. Lucie Mets will miss him.

Wow...I haven't heard his name in a long time. Unfortunate this is what brought it up again. I thought he did a solid job with those Reds teams he played on. R.I.P. Rick

RIP Rick. I remember watching him pitch at Fulton County Stadium when I was a youngster. For a while, he was one of the few bright spots on some very bad Braves teams.

I guess a lot of people around the country who are around my age (29) watched a lot of Atlanta Braves baseball in the early to mid 80's when TBS became a superstation and the Braves were truly America's team. I was a Phillies fan, but I knew just as much about the Braves since I watched at least some of most of their games. Sad to see Rich Mahler passed.... I loved 80's baseball, and sadly I think most players from that era will be forgotten due to the explosion of stats in the 90's and so far this century. RIP Rick.

Very, very true. I'll be 29 in October and I feel the exact same way. I watched as many Braves games as Reds games back then just because I could. Same with the Cubbies. Those Braves teams in the 80's weren't that good but I still remember all of the guys that played for them back then: Bob Horner, Glenn Hubbard, Rafael Ramirez, Dale Murphy, Claudell Washington, Brad Komminsk. Rick Mahler was one of those pitchers that always seemed to start when I caught a Braves game. I still remember a game back then when it was tied in the 9th, someone got a hit, and I'll never forget Skip Carey's call, "Heeere comes Hubbard around third!" Hubbard lost his helmet freeing his mullet. Slid into home. He ended up being safe and the Braves won.
