    The A-Rod Effect

With Sammy gone does anyone else think the Cubs might throw everyone for a loop and have a dynamite season with a distraction like Sammy out of the club house? It seemed like it was always something with him...the corked bat...'the sneeze'....the debate over where he should hit...the debate over his strikeouts.

The media put him under a microscope and made a big deal over everything with him. I wonder (and hope) if now that he's gone it will have the same effect that A-Rod leaving the Rangers had and the Cubs will have a stellar year.

I wouldn't count on it. I think Dusty Baker had more to do with their problems than Sammy did. Though i see Sammy's off to a spetacular start in baltimore ... getting ejected in a spring training game.

        Re: The A-Rod Effect

During todays Cubs//Rangers game on ESPN they asked Dusty a couple of Times if Sammy was distraction to the team last season and of course, he said no.

The key to the Cubs is going to be the pitching staff. We know they can score runs, Ramirez and Lee both hit over 30 HRs last season as did Jeremy Burnitz, and before anyone says it was only because he played in Colorado keep in mind when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley it might as well be Coors Field. They will also have Nomar for a full season, offensively they'll be fine.
Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have got to be healthy ALL SEASON for the Cubs to be successfull. With those two plus Zambrano and Maddux the Cubs have the best rotation in the division.

Will the Cubs better without Sosa? maybe, but only if the pitching holds up.

Great post RSox...excellent points. I mostly think the offense will be ok...I'm still a little worried about the last OF spot...Burnitz and Patterson should be ok...the two-headed monster of Hollandsworth/Dubois is a little scary to me.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gary Matthew's Jr. in left but he's having a good spring training with Texas so I don't see him leaving there. I'd really like to see us get Huff from TB but that's probably unlikely too.

I think Sammy will be less of an impact loss than Moises Alou. Sammy bash-a-dinger was fine in the power dept, but with runners on I'd rather face Sammy than Moises.

You can get Sammy to chase pitches and have a better chance of getting out of the inning, but Moises will hack, chop, and generally drive you nuts until you leave one in the strike zone and suddenly you're trying to figure out how to get that run back.

Sammy replaced by Burnitz and Lee, who took Moises spot?
