Dodgers close to sending Ishii to Mets..

The Mets are close to acquiring left-hander Kaz Ishii from the Dodgers in exchange for catcher Jason Phillips, Sporting News' Ken Rosenthal has learned.

The Mets had been looking for a starting pitcher after losing right-hander Steve Trachsel to back surgery, and the Dodgers have been looking to upgrade their catching from David Ross and Paul Bako, both career backups.
Ishii has spent the spring battling for the No. 5 spot in Los Angeles' starting rotation and will now likely battle for the Mets' No. 5 spot behind Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano.

Ishii started last season in the starting rotation before manager Jim Tracy demoted him to the bullpen in August because of control problems. Ishii was the only pitcher in the majors to walk more than 100 batters in both 2002 and 2003, and he was on target to do it again last season before his demotion.

"This year, I'm focusing on not worrying about walks so much," Ishii said recently. "Not thinking about it helps me focus on what I'm doing now."

Phillips has been especially hot this spring for the Mets, going 11-for-20 (.550) with nine RBIs through Thursday.

Honestly, I don't want to see the Mets making this trade.

For starters, you don't know how long the Pizza man is going to be behind home plate this year. He's had a history of groin, elbow, back, etc problems, and he's 36 years old. Personally, I WANT Phillips to be my starting catcher next season.

Kaz Ishii, to me, seems like a lefty Victor Zambrano. He walks more than he strikes out, which isn't good news. I don't care if we have Rick Peterson as our pitching coach, I don't want this guy as our temporary fifth starters. What about Matt Ginter or Aaron Heilman?

The Dodgers are STOCKED with starting pitching. Could they send some more relief pitching too (ie Dreifort maybe? j/k - probably won't happen).

    Just my thoughts...

Ishii has had a good spring for the Dodgers, he has not allowed an earned run in 7 innings but more importantly he has more strikeouts (10) than walks (4). Phillips has been good as well, but i wonder how much the Dodgers are looking at him to be a Catcher or an option at 1B should Hee Seop Choi struggle at the plate.

It's a done deal. Former Marlin Ramon Castro will likely take Phillips place as the Mets backup Catcher unless they make another move before the start of the season.
