Astros trade Tim Redding to Padres

Thoughts, Padre fans? Redding was a disappointment in Houston. He showed proimise here and there, but never could get it together. HE might thrive with a change of scenery though, who knows.

I don't know much about Quintero, and am curious if they will now send Raoul Chavez down, or trade him etc.

Not a bad deal for the Padres. Redding has a good arm and some potential, still fairly young.

As for Quintero, I believe he's regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the minors. Not much with the stick, though.

Interesting trade. A pitcher's park like Petco might help Redding. I remember that Quintero filled in for Ramon Hernandez while he was hurt. Didn't do that badly. You're right, it will be interesting to see what the 'Stros will do with Chavez. Haven't paid much attention to what he was doing this spring but maybe they aren't happy with him. Plus, Ausmus might not have much left in the tank. Maybe they figure Quintero and Chavez are their catching duo for the future. The important thing about this trade is Redding though. If the Padres can turn him around, their rotation will be that much better. I think they have a great one now before the trade.

Well, there's no question that Redding has good stuff. His problems have been inconsistency and mental breakdowns, so it's very conceiveable that a change of scenery (especially a pitcher's park) might help him. It could be a good trade for both teams.

Redding is just like Adam Eaton... which is better to have two in the rotation than to have Sparks or May . Anywho, Petco might help him... and perhaps Balsley can as well. This trade may be made better if Hernandez is locked in for a couple more years.

As for Quintero, the cards looked like they were stacked against him because Ramon is interested in staying with the Padres a little longer and Ojeda has been improving. Not to mention there's another catching prospect in the farm system. Good defensively... but I'm not sure about his offensive potential... although in a hitter's park that may change.
