ahh any win against the sox is a good win even if it's opening day but because its opening day ya cant talk that much trash. I am gonna say two things though boomer looked terrible today he coulda had a few to many beers or it coulda been working with a new catcher on opening day or something i dont really know. The other thing is that amazing red sox bullpen was lit up like a christmas tree.......maybe a sign of things to come......lol just kidding. Good game though until it got ugly and it was really fun to see tino play, giambi get a hit, and unit pitch well. Kinda weird to see boomer wear the number of the man who started the whole curse, though.

Good game for the Yanks, but there are 161 left to go.

About what I expected for tonights game. R. Johnson vs D. Wells isn't a good matchup for the Red Sox at all. Oh well, it's a long season.

Re: Opening Day - Red Sox @ Yankees

The culture of Red Sox Nation has changed, to the point where I do not care about a regular season loss in April to the Yankees. When Randy Johnson pitches against your team, you don't expect them to win. I didn't expect the Sox to win and I didn't think Wells looked quite ready for the show in spring training. He tired early and wasn't as sharp as he needs to be. It wasn't a terrible start for Wells, but it wasn't good. Johnson also didn't look as sharp as we're used to seeing him, but he got guys out when he needed to and kept the runs off the board. I'm not really concerned about the bullpen, the only bullpen guy who looked bad tonight that Red Sox fans should care about is Mantei. If the guy is throwing strikes, he's dominant, but when he can't command his fastball he's toast. He couldn't get ahead of hitters tonight, hopefully that doesn't become a problem. Tom Gordon didn't look very sharp either. After a poor spring, you have to wonder if he was just plain overworked last year (well, we know he was overworked given his ALCS numbers) to the point where there's some lasting effects carried over into this season. Torre would be wise to not work him so hard and not put him in games where they have an eight run lead. I was kind of surprised they didn't just let Sturtze go for the 3 inning save.

Tuesday's matchup of Clement and Pavano interests me far more than tonight's matchup. We know what to expect from Johnson and Wells but there are some question marks around the number 2 pitchers. Hopefully it is a more interesting game than tonight's. Pavano also can't do any worse than he did in his last start against the Sox, where he failed to retire a single batter and the Red Sox sent 11 men to the plate before making an out.

I remember that game from 2003. It was by far the most impressive hitting performance I've ever seen. The Red Sox scored 25 runs on 28 hits after scoring 14 in the 1st inning. They scored in every inning except the 6th. Johnny Damon was 3-3 with a single, double and triple in the 1st alone. Here's a link to the boxscore. Click on play-by-play and check out the 1st inning.

Another interesting footnote to that game: Blaine Neal who is now on the Red Sox pitched 2 innings, allowing 4 runs.
