    Exit Sandman

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...s/cowbell/blog

THE BRONX (April 6) -- Major League Baseball on Wednesday set April 8 as the date for the historic start of the conclave to elect a successor to Mariano Rivera, as the Yankees made final arrangements for the funeral of a great career that is expected to draw millions of Yankee fans and world leaders to the Bronx.

The decision came after the future Hall of Famer blew his second save in as many days against the team's biggest rival, the World Champion Red Sox, giving up five runs in the ninth, getting battered like a rented mule and ignominiously getting removed from the game in the middle of the inning, the fourth consecutive time he has blown a save to the Red Sox dating back to the 2004 ALCS. Fans at Yankee Stadium even booed the great closer on his way back to the dugout, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Yankee fans are headed to hell.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said the Yankees would be sequestered in the team offices in the early afternoon to start the decision process for the next closer. Candidates include Oakland's Octavio Dotel, Detroit's Ugueth Urbina, current set-up man Flash Gordon, Rick Ankiel and Charlie Sheen. The Yankees will continue to use Rivera from the bullpen, but only in blowouts and games where the lead or deficit is six runs or more.

If none of the candidates gets the required two-thirds majority after about 12 days, the Yankee braintrust may change procedure and elect the closer by simple majority. The date was set on the third hour of preparatory meetings of Yankee front office people who have converged on the Bronx ahead of Friday's funeral and burial of Rivera's career.

Fans continued to flock to Yankee Stadium after Wednesday's game, jamming up streets as they waited to pay their final respects to Rivera, who has been lying in state of shock since the Red Sox hammered him off the field for the second straight day. More than 200,000 Yankee fans will have filed solemnly by the pinstriped body by the end of Wednesday night, at a rate of about 15,000-18,000 people an hour in a nearly around-the-clock procession, according to calculations by the Yankee front office.
18-1 hell of a season regardless

    lol, nice.

Rivera really wasn't hit all that hard, and A-Rod should share some of the blame, but WTF is up with the fans booing him. A disgrace, after all Rivera has done for that franchise. Inexcusable. I'd hate to make the generalization, but yankee fans suck. They deserve the kind of failure they've been getting force-fed the last few years when they do disrespectful crap like that.

Seems like he would have been ok if A-Rod had made the play. However, has Rivera lost velocity lately or command or anything like that?
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

He seems to have lost a lot of command. He was missing his location on a lot of his pitches. It all started with the walk to Mueller (where he appeared to be trying to be to perfect). If Martinez isn't holding Mueller on, Bellhorn's hit is a pretty easy groundout. The only (sort of) hard hit ball of that innings was Damon's. Renteria's was also well hit, but wasn't hit all that hard, because of the movement of Rivera's pitches.

It's like a Red Sox phenomenon that they can read Mo's pitches so easily. Even though he throws cutter-cutter-cutter a lot, it's extremely effective against every team except the Red Sox. I remember hearing something about Mariano's performance against the rest of the league as compared with just the Sox. Something like in his entire career, he's blown about 16 saves to other teams. But in the past three-four years alone, he's blown 9 saves to the Sox.

I don't remember how it was ... I think it was Ecoliman. Anyway. In the Yankees Bleacher Creatures topic, he suggested that Flash Gordon pitches to the Sox to close games out. I've taken the time to compare their career stats against the Sox and, well, Gordon comes out as the better pitcher.

3 games into the season...let's not panic.

I know he stuggled against the Sox in the playoffs, but I'm willing to bet that Rivera, arguably the greatest closer ever, will be OK.

I don't think he has some mental block against the Red Sox. He hasn't pitched well first 2 games this year. He might have been able to get by against some teams, but he hasn't been able to get the cutter inside enough consistently.

The Red Sox have hit him well lately, but they are the best offense in baseball, and they have faced him more than anyone else the last couple years. I think the Red Sox probably hit most Yankee pitchers better than most teams. It just gets magnified when you always pitch with the game on the line.

              Rivera will be ok.

In the last two seasons, playoffs included, the Sox-Yanks have faced each other around 55 times with Rivera appearing in I think 28 or 29 of those games. That's a lot of games against the same team. Not to mention the best offense in baseball two years running.
Rivera will still dominate the rest of the league.

P.S. I'm from Boston, so I hope his woes continue!

Probably EliColeman, but did anyone find "Ecoliman" funny in the least?

Not busting balls, just thought that was funny

I didn't watch the game but the radio announcers were saying he wasn't throwing his cutter all that much. Instead, just throwing straight fastballs. I know Rivera was having elbow problems this spring, perhaps this is related?

In any case, the Sox have seen Rivera an awful lot over the last couple years so have an advantage most teams don't. But the bottom line is, he is still one of the best closers the game has ever seen and I'd rather face another pitcher any day of the week.

He's throwing some straight fastballs and turning over the fastball while mixing in the cut. I think he was trying to change things up, which is why I think the Sox are in his head.

In any case, the Yankees do have to find a successor to Rivera for when his contract's up/he retires. I think they're considering Scott Proctor to fill the role.
