The best ever, bar none.
Need I say more than the two words, which ring in my mind like an essay by Poe. When he stepped to the plate, the aforementioned two words echoed thorought the stadium like a Roman War cry, while the opposing pitcher could only stand in fear of the repurcussions of a hung curve or a missed spot. Journeyman Dickie Thon epitomized the complete player, from gold, neigh, platinum glove at every infield position to the 34 ounce bat he held like an ax, ready to strike down the sapling that was the pitchers confidence, and tear out the teams chances of victory like a rotten stump. Need I say more? Mantle, Ruth, Mays, Williams, Dimaggio, all pale in the giant shadow of Tho-Th-Th-Th-Thon. When faced with this legend, they were quick to throw in a thank you sir, that will be all sir, when referring to their hero. Dickie Thon is baseball, and baseball is Dickie Thon.Tags: None -
Re: The best ever, bar none.
I had the privilege of watching the Thonmeister during his glory years in the early 80s with the Houston Astros. Every time he strode to the dish, each person, big or small, got to their feet to watch him perform. Whether he struck out, popped out, or homered (which he did 20 times in 1983), he was still the Astros clubhouse leader, and the heart and soul of the team. It didn't matter what he did, what mattered was that he did it. To say that someone like Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, or Ted Williams is the greatest player ever is hogwash. Not a one of them ever showed up to the ballpark each day with the same fire burning inside of them. For these reasons Dickie Thon is the greatest player in baseball history.Comment

Re: The best ever, bar none.
Yes I am serious!
You can't judge a man simply by his stats, I mean did Babe Ruth not strike out more than any other man in baseball history? You must look at Dickie not as a number, but as the clubhouse presence that his teammates looked up to. He was more like a coach on the field than any average player. Look at his stats and remain ignorant of the caliber of baseball he played, or face the facts that he was one of the few athletes in this age who could bring a man to tears at the modesty and beauty of his play.
There's more inside Dickie than can be expressed with just .260-5-40 seasons. The man was a baseball god, and players like him come around but once in a generation. The only thing that kept him off of Hall of Fame balloting is the fact that the facsist writers that vote for HOF'rs don't take into account on- and off-field presence, and vote based solely on statistics. In this crazy era of baseball, journeymen such as the Sacred Thon do not get the attention and recognition that they deserve. Long live the Thon-Th-Th-Th-Thon!Comment

Re: The best ever, bar none.
Actually this is funny because a couple of years ago Peter Gammons (I think) came out and said that prior to being beaned Thon was on track to become one of the all time great baseball players. IIRC, he even defended his statement on Baseball Tonight.Overall satisfaction also makes the decline!!!!!!!!!!!!Comment
