The losingest franchise in sports history seems to like continuing the tradition. Yes, the payroll is over 90 million. So what? For the past 4 years (and more than that, but starting with the Bowa era), this team cannot hit with men on base. Why is this such a problem to solve? Everyone and their momma could tell you this team strikes out entirely too much and is horrible with men on base. It's like when a Phillies player sees a man on 2nd or 3rd, he goes into "Duh" mode.
Thome is getting on my nerves. I want to like Burrell. He's doing good this season so far. But Thome, Abreu, Lieberthal and some of these other guys get on my damn nerves. Rollins is great. Lofton is doing good for what he is. Chase Utley, who seems to make things happen every time he plays, can't start because Placido Polanco is starting at second for whatever reason. Everyone else I'm sick of. The Phils need players that can consistently put the ball in play and can score runs. I'm tired of Rollins and Lofton getting on base every time and then....fart....that's it. They're left on base.
I won't even touch the pitching staff. Thank goodness for Lieber, though.
See, this is why I kept telling people that is was never Larry Bowa's fault. He wasn't the greatest manager, but he was good. But he was given a team that can't do sh*t. A bunch of whiny children that bitch and moaned because Bowa wanted to light a fire up their asses. They get him gone and bring in Mr. Happy Day Care, Charlie Manuel. I like the guy and I think he's a good manager as well. But his players are not working for him, either.
This has to fall all on the owners and GM Ed Wade. No GM that has fielded teams like this has ever stayed on this long. But Wade seems to have this invincibility. I will give the owners SOME credit. They gave Wade the green light to spend 95 million. I will give them that. But it's also their job to rid of soemone that is not doing the job.
Ed Wade is a terrible TERRIBLE general manager and if he isn't gone after this season or even during this season....I think this city will forever forget the Phillies.
