    Thoughts on 2005 Draft

The draft is not that far away. Even though the Yanks pick from the 17th spot, I think they're going to end up with one hell of a player. 2 of Boras's clients (Stephen Drew and Jered Weaver) have yet to sign and will most likely go back into the draft. It looks like even the free spending Angels won't shell out the dough for Weaver. He might only need one year of seasoning in the minors like Hudson Street before playing in the bigs. If rookie contracts were slotted like the NBA, Weaver would probably be the first pick.

I expect Justin Upton to go first to the D-Backs. He's a 5 tool player. I would be a little bit worried because he's a HS'er. If I was a GM I would usually lean towards drafting a college player because the risk isn't as high.

The 2nd pick should either be Cameron Maybin or Alex Gordon.

From the Jays perspective, they have the 6th pick and I'm hoping they take Jeff Clement from USC. He's a power hitting catcher with excellent plate discipline. He's solid behind the plate.

Boston with the 23rd pick could also take a player that should go higher but won't because he's a Boras client. I wouldn't be suprised to see them draft Stephen Drew. But the Sox are set at SS right now so he could shift to 3B.

Other players that should go in the top 10 are Luke Hochevar, Mike Pelfrey, Ricky Romero (I know the Jays scouted him last week). Ryan Zimmerman, Stephen Head, and Tyler Greene.

Mayberry out of Stanford will probably be a mid-first rounder. He has pretty good power. I also like who you mentioned... Alex Gordon... he's toolsy. I don't know too much about the high schoolers other than a few that are coming out of San Diego. It should be another interesting draft.

Justin Upton will go number one, the kid can flat out play. It would be nice to see him in a NC State uniform, but we all know he won't play at college.

I've also followed Cameron Maybin a lot this season.. kid is batting around .700 and is one of the state leaders in HR. He has so much potential, he can be a star one day. I see him going #3.
