    Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds

As far as future pitching goes, the Reds need to look at the Braves team of the late 80's. They built Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, and Avery from FA signings, trades, and draft picks. Why can't Cueto, Homer, and Maloney be similar for the Reds in a couple of years? Those three, Votto, and Bruce are the future of this team. Unless they plan on signing Dunn to a long-term deal and forcing him to play 1B, they can't trade Votto. Junior isn't going to be here much longer. I honestly don't know why they feel the need to trade prospects for this season. I like Blanton but he isn't worth two top prospects like Billy Boy has been asking for.

Word here in Cincy is the Reds have signed Brandon Phillips to a large long term contract.
All I can say is it is about time and I am glad we now have an owner that wants to win.

I've got a couple of questions for Reds fans, what is the deal with Todd Coffey? He's a distant relative of mine, but I've never seen him play. Is he as bad as his ERA? Also does anyone know anything about Marcus McBeth? My dad works with his parents.

To me, & i might be a minority here...Todd Coffey's MAIN problem is CONFIDENCE...he has ZERO...plain & simple. he DOES have major league stuff, it's just he has to go to the mound thinking he's gonna mow down every one he faces. i'll tell you WHO he needs to mimic, & that's Jared Burton...to me this guy is going to be dominant within the next year or so. Coffey has dropped 25lbs or so, so he's takin' this upcoming season personal...we'll see.

On a side note...if the Phillips rumor is true, thank god for that. to me he'll be the best 2nd baseman in the majors soon...if he ain't already.

2 years ago coffey was bad *** and in line to be our closer.... last year he just lost all confidence. i hope he can gain it back this year, we'll see.

as for phillips .... about time.

              Terms have been disclosed:

              Brandon Phillips
              4yrs
              $27 million

Personally I think this is a very good deal for the Reds. They get potentially the best 2nd baseman in the NL at a very reasonable price, plus he wants to stay there until he retires which will make future negotiations reasonable.

he probably deserved more but I'm glad he accepted it and won't have to worry about a contract during the season.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Reds manager Dusty Baker is always talking about finding a player who is not in the plans coming through to help the club.

"You're always looking for that surprise player," Baker said.

Right-hander Josh Roenicke, 25, could be that guy this year for the Reds. Roenicke has a major-league pedigree and a 98 mph fastball.

Roenicke is the son of Gary Roenicke and the nephew of Ron Roenicke, both of whom played in the majors.

Roenicke is a long shot to make the club. He has just 19 games above the Single-A level. But he was dominant last year: a combined 3-2 record, with a 2.31 ERA and 24 saves at Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga. He was better after the promotion to Double-A - 1-1 with an 0.95 ERA.

This is his first big-league camp.

"I'm here more for the experience," he said. "My dad told me to make it hard on them (to send me out). It should be fun."

Roenicke took an odd path to become a pitcher. He grew up in Ruff and Ready, Calif.

"I hope he lives up to his name and his town," Baker said.

"I get kidded a lot about that," Roenicke said.

He went to UCLA on a football scholarship with an agreement that he'd be allowed to try out for the baseball team. He played quarterback his first two years, then switched to wide receiver.

He also played outfield for the baseball team. Because of his good arm, he was used as a closer.

"It was like high school," he said. "I'd walk in from center field to the mound."

The Reds picked Roenicke in the 10th-round of the 2006 draft. He went a combined 2-0 with a 4.63 ERA and six saves that year.

As Roenicke pitched more, his velocity increased.

"I didn't throw this hard in college or my first year," he said. "I always had a really good arm in the outfield. So I thought I'd be able to throw harder. I've been working on my mechanics."

Roenicke throws a fastball, curveball and a change-up. He also has an advantage - Baker is familiar with him.

"I hunted with his dad this winter," Baker said. "He talked about him and his background . . . I've been following him since he was in high school."
98mph would like to see him make the club, if he has a good spring.

It's a good insurance plan though. If the young guys struggle and lose confidence, send them down let them get it back and still stay above water with a veteran like Fogg. He's not great, but he has a .500 record even though he's pitched on some bad teams (Pittsburgh).
