    Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds

Breaking Cincinnati news, traffic, weather and local headlines from The Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper.

Jays 8, Reds 4 (Bruce: mild quad strain)

The Reds lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4 Sunday. The good news: Jay Bruce's injury is not serious.

Bruce doubled in two runs in the second. Chris Dickerson tripled with two outs -- the guy runs like his cousin, Eric -- and Paul Bako walked. Bruce hit one the opposite way to left-center. Bruce came out of the game after inning. He suffered a mild left quadriceps strain.

    He's day-to-day.

"It's no big deal," Bruce said. "I felt it rounding first. There's no use taking any chances this early in spring. It's not serious at all."

Bronson Arroyo went two perfect innings, throwing 18 pitches. He threw more in the bullpen to try to get a little bit sore. Arroyo was up all night throwing up.

Johnny Cueto also had the flu. He's looked pretty good until he gave up back-to-back, two-out singles in the fourth. The second one scored a run. His line: 2 IP, 4 hits, 1 runs, no walks, 2 strikeouts.

"His stuff was electric," Dusty Baker said. "And he wasn't even feeling good. He'll get better."

The Jays took the lead when Buck Coats took Mike Stanton out to right-center for the two-run homer. It wasn't a good day for veteran relievers: David Weathers and Kent Mercker each gave up two runs, Francisco Cordero gave up one. That made it 8-4.

"They're older guys," Baker said. "It takes them longer to get ready. They depend on location and sharpness."

The Reds scored unearned runs in the sixth and eighth.

Excellent read, thanks. I can't believe the amount of talent the Reds appear to have in the minor's these days. It has been forever since we had this much home grown talent. I can't wait to see how it all pans out for these guys.

Yep, this year is going to tell us a lot about the top prospects. I can't wait to see what happens with Bailey, Bruce, Cueto, Votto, and heck for that matter, Keppinger.

Do you guys want Bruce to start the year in the Majors?

I read something about Patterson probably getting the starting job, pushing Bruce to minors for the beginning of the season.

The Reds are calling it a center field competition, but Patterson will probably get the gig. This will allow the Reds to keep Jay Bruce in the minors until June and delay his future free agency by a year.
According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have signed 28 year-old center fielder Corey Patterson to a …

depend son how his spring training goes. if he tears it up like hamilton did last year, then yeah. if it's so so, then i'd rather him get some time in louisville.

I take it that the signing of Hairston means the injury to Gonzalez is worse than originally thought. Makes for nice backup if Keppinger can't hit.

                    Re: 2008 Cincinnati Reds

BTW, I've been reading some negative things come out about Homer Bailey recently. This is from Buster Olney:

                    • The stock of Cincinnati prospect Homer Bailey seems to have taken a dramatic tumble in the past year. Talent evaluators say the Reds have demonstrated a clear willingness to deal Bailey, while coveting fellow prospect Johnny Cueto. And rival teams have grown increasingly skeptical about whether the young right-hander will make the adjustments necessary to become a successful big league pitcher. "What you hear is that [Bailey] is someone who thinks he's got it all figured out," one evaluator said.

And also, Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News had this to say of Bailey when he was on Charlie Steiners XM radio show- "Homer is a little bit of a headcase. He doesn't like to listen to people. He might get a dose of Louisville..."

These are not good things to hear....just hoping its because of his young age.

Homer can be a good pitcher but was hyped big time because the Reds havnt really had a good pitcher come through the system in sometime. People were advertising him as a 98mph flamethrower. Yes, he can hit that but not consistently if trying to pace himself as a starter does.

Also I would expect Bruce to start the year in the minors since I have heard some concern about his ability to play CF.......I think its in stone that Jr.will be in RF and Dunn in LF. I'm a big lover on Dunn but if he can be moved for an upgrade in pitching and Bruce inserted into LF I would approve.

Homer certainly isn't the first guy to roll through the minors and think they have it all figured out. Brandon Phillips was kind of like that. Maybe starting him in the minors will give him a dose of reality. He's still just a young kid. Hell, I have a picture of Homer with a female friend of mine at a Mt. Adams bar not too long after he turned 21 last year.

I agree about Homer being overhyped. I do think he has the capabiliy to be a stud though, but he does need to get his crap straight first.

As far as Bruce and CF, the only negatives I have heard came from Dusty talking about him having too many leg injuries for someone to play CF. Yesterday Bruce discussed with Dusty that the only injuries he has had are two and one was because he was messing around and broke a bat over his leg. Doesn't seem to be an issue.

Have you heard other things besides that about Bruce in CF?
