Yeah, but at the same time, 2017 is the year we move into the new park, and clearly the year circled as the year we move back into being legitimate contenders. As of right now, our committed payroll is actually higher in 2017 than 2016, even before taking arbitration into account, because 2017 is the year Freddie's salary jumps. I could see it either way. Getting a better haul would be nice, but freeing up $10-17 million would be real nice; money that could be used in free agency the next two seasons, or money that can be used on international players before mlb changes the rules.

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
The Kimbrel trade looks good so far though. Wisler and Maybin are two huge pieces for us. The Heyward trade looks like a steal. The Upton trade got us Jace and hopefully Fried picks up where he left off after recovery.
Only the Gattis trade has a sour taste in my mouth currently. Ruiz hasn't had a good season in the minors and Folty has been struggling.

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
Folty is only 22. He's lowered his era in triple A by two full runs this season. He's a LOT closer than Fried, who was a few years away even before his injury.Comment

Welp...this team is predictable. Get to .500 and then lose 5 games they could/should win. Get to .500, rinse and repeat. This is a .500 team...inconsistent offense, young starting pitching, and a wildly inconsistent bullpen. It is what it is..."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. Way too early to give up on him.Comment

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
.367 babip when he was up. His control needs refinement too. He's got 24 walks in 45 innings in Gwinnett. He also has 54 strikeouts. So clearly, he has dynamic stuff. He got a lot of Ks in Atlanta too.Comment

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
I am 100% convinced that Folty has the highest ceiling of any of the pitchers on our staff right now. The guy is electric and if he learns to pitch could be a stud. Of course, guys like him flame out all the time as well...I just don't think you even think about giving up on him.
I think he's at best a 3rd starter behind Wisler and Baneulos.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

I'm not saying that Wisler/Baneulos are scrubs, I just don't think they have the "stuff" that Folty has. Its amazing all the good young pitching we have...would love to see some impact bats start to develop in the system (btw, I think Peraza is highly overrated...am I the only one?)"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
I feel pretty good about Wisler, Banuelos and Folty. Despite the numbers, Perez is the one I'm not sold on. I just don't see him having the same ceiling those other three have.
I'd try to attach Johnson with Perez in an offseason deal.Comment

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
I agree sell high on Maybin. Love watching him on this team. He looks like he is having fun and he's a big contributer for this season. This season is a wash though and we know it. He's having an abnormal year from his baseball card, and his age does not align itself very well with where the Braves likely are as a franchise for legitimately competing.
One thing I do not want though is missing out on prospects by attaching CJ to the trade just to free up salary. If we can get some good prospects out of a deal then do it and worry about salary later. Young guys are cheap by default, and CJ's contract is far from what we had with Upton. So, even getting out of it, it's not like we suddenly have payroll to sign the biggest free agent out there.Comment

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
You're splitting hairs at some point. Of the high minors guys, I'd say, ceiling-wise, it's Banuelos, Folty, Wisler. Floor wise, it's Wisler, Banuelos, Folty. Absolute worst case scenario, besides an arm falling off, but that goes for anyone, Wisler is a solid 3/4 type starter, Banuelos is a very good to elite setup man, and Folty bounces between triple A and the Majors for a few years, maybe settling in as a mid reliever. Best case, Banuelos is an ace, Folty/Wisler are #2's (and all-star #2's). I think Fried and Toussaint have higher ceilings than any of them, short of maybe Banuelos. Fried had a 3.49 era in A ball at 19; he's got two plus pitches, with a third that could become plus. He's got top of the rotation potential. Toussaint is even better; he's got legitimate ace potential. He's 19, and has a 3.38 ERA in A ball. 2.51 since coming to Rome.
It's ridiculous how much young pitching depth we have. And that's ignoring Miller, who's an All-Star and 3rd in the NL in ERA, Teheran a former all-star (and his last 2 starts were really good!), and Wood, who has a 3.02 career era, better than either of the other 2 guys. All 24. And Lucas Sims, who's highly ranked, but getting wrecked this season. Even if the advanced guys don't hit their ceilings, by 2017 we probably will have had to deal one of the then 26 year olds for a bat to make room. And Toussaint and/or Fried will probably be in Triple A by that time.Comment

But the more I think about it, the more I think we should think about moving him longterm. He loses value for us in that he's going to be play 2B; he's capable of being a very, very good defensive SS, but we have Andrelton. And I think Mallex Smith is much more likely to be the leadoff hitter going forward (has struggled so far in triple A, but hit .340/.418/.413 in double A; he'll get there). So to me, we could keep an 8th hitting second baseman, or we could trade a leadoff hitting Shortstop and get that level of value back for him. He could be the centerpiece of a deal for an impact bat this offseason or next.Comment

Re: 2015 Atlanta Braves
I think Peraza will be very, very good. He's not ready (.306 obp in triple A), but he's young (21) and had a .339/.364/.441 slash between high A and double A last year. Obviously some luck had to be involved there, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think he could be a .300/.340/.380 type guy in the majors. He's not going to be a game breaker, but that's pretty good. And he's a very, very good basestealer. If you treat his stolen bases as an extra base towards slugging (never understood how there's not a stat for that, but maybe there is), his slugging would be .428. I think he could be a great defensive second baseman who is capable of being a very good leadoff hitter.
