I think this summed up the Cubs approach well; they are essentially banking on the fact they are better than they played last year.

I'm expecting Joe Maddon brand shirts with the tagline "Internal Improvements" at Spring Training this year

I imagine ricketts is a shrewd enough businessman to know that that one WS title will likely keep the revenue rolling in for some time.

Not saying he's not trying to win...I just think he's more interested, like the Trib, in making money.

        Odds on Bryant Re-signing?

I think high. There's a lot of money coming off the books when he actually hits FA, so I don't think they'll sign him early, but I think they open the checkbook when they need to.

Watched a replay of the Cubs game and Chatwood looked good. 3 IP, 0 BB, 3 Ks and his stuff looked really sharp.

I know he made a change with his hand separation to be more consistent with his arm swing. Maybe he can provide some value this year as a reliever or if there's an injury in the rotation

Handful of fringe guys with great springs...starting lineup looking good, too.

Going to hate it if Happ and Heyward are hitting .220 while we wonder if we could get more from some of these other guys.

Won't have to worry about that with Happ at least. He was optioned to AAA today

Dunno who is getting his spot...but Descalso isn't any better than having Happ...it's a pick your poison...though I'm glad the team is holding him accountable for his strikeouts.

He's not happy about it, but the best he was going to get with the big club was the occasional start against lefties...

Baez needs to be moved to 2B to decrease his work load...

Of course he's a great SS, but we have guys that can do that well enough with little decrease in defensive quality, while allowing him to shoulder less of a defensive burden at 2B.

Crossing my fingers on the heel issue...foot injuries can be tricky.

This team is also going to need a SP boost...

Does it come from Chatwood? His numbers thus far reflect his better seasons in Colorado...

Who would be in the trading block? Russell? Or (gasp) Almora? I'd imagine anyone in the pen not named Cishek, Stropp, or Kimbrel would be thrown in, as well... Not much to include from the farm

Maples should be with the big club...what a shot in the arm Morrow could be if he ever shows up...but signing CK might suggest the club knows it ain't happening.

What do you do with Darvish if you move Chatwood to the rotation or acquire someone? I'm guessing that's who would move out?

Not sure...but I think a six man rotation towards the end of the season would allow for Much-needed rest, as well as a chance to see who has the "hot hand" going into postseason

I hope they go with this. Especially once rosters are expanded.
