    NIT to makes changes

    NCAA to make NIT changes
    posted: Tuesday, November 8, 2005

Politicking for second-round home games in the NIT Season Tip-Off and the Postseason NIT will no longer occur.

The NCAA will make sure everyone knows where the games could be held before the event starts.

Greg Shaheen, the NCAA vice president in charge of caretaking the NIT for the foreseeable future, said the confusion over second-round sites in both events was one of the major faults of the way the previous NITs were run.

Promises were made. Coaches tried to lobby for games. Memphis and Alabama are still lobbying to secure a possible second-round home game next week in the 2005 event.

Shaheen also said that the previous way of doing the second round made it impossible to pre-sell the event.

The one-and-done format of the NIT Season Tip-Off also is up for debate and likely is going to disappear. A review of the NCAA minutes from a meeting two weeks ago showed that the NIT could consider four hosting sites with four teams at each site -- similar to the current Guadians Classic and Coaches vs. Cancer formats. That would allow teams to get at least two games, with a maximum of four in the event.

The NIT will continue its makeover this week with the naming of a selection committee that is supposed to be unique to the sport without attachment to a university or conference but impeccable ethics.

The selection committee will pick the 40-team postseason NIT. Apparently, there won't be any more odd selections of opening-round games (for some reason, Saint Joseph's had to play one last season despite barely missing the NCAA Tournament).

The NIT committee will be separate from the NCAA Tournament selection committee but will have the same access to team information in selecting its bracket. It will also be privy to when an at-large team is put into the NCAA bracket, taking them off the NIT board. The NIT committee will put together its bracket and it will be released at 9 p.m. on Selection Sunday night. In previous years, the NIT bracket wasn't known until later into the night, sometimes closer to midnight before all dates and times were finalized.

That should be interesting with the selection committee deciding.

I'm glad to have the NIT matchups announced earlier too. Like they said, it would take well after midnight to find out when teams were playing. Kind of frustrating if you were needing the info.
