If George Mason were to win the title.

Do you think that the term "mid-major" will be put to bed?

      Of course not.

I would flip and burn my car though in celebration if they won.

Conference USA has Memphis, and they're still considered a mid-major.

I don't think one team automatically gives the rest of the small schools in the country any immediate or long term credibility.

Memphis hasn't won a national title though. Bill Walton cheated in that game too, by the way.

Did it go away when UNLV won the championship? Did it go away when Utah was in the Final Four? Every year there will be a few mid majors that are great successes in the tourny. However, every year those mid majors are impossible to guess, and ussually very inconsistant. For the most part, there's a noticable differance that separates midmajors from power conferances. Now, this differance is often wildly exagerated (the tenth BE team would destroy George Mason), but there is a differance.

We'll never lose this term barring a dramatic change in the NCAA.

I think the problem is that people evaluate the league based on the bottom rather than the top. Many mid-majors that are on top of their conference are close to if not equal to many of the top teams in the power conferences. It's just that the bottom-feeders in the mid-majors are largely worse than the bottom-feeders in the power conferences which makes us incorrectly perceive certain top-level teams from some conferences to be weak.
