Idea to Make the NIT Relevant Again

I thought about these ideas while watching Selection Sunday. This could make the NIT and the NCAA relevant at the same time. Warning: My second or third idea may make a few of you a little angry.

    Ideas:
Select the top 64 teams after the conference regular season.
Reduce the NIT field from 32 to 16 teams. These would be the teams that their bubble burst.
    Eliminate conference tournaments all together.
Play the NIT in place of the conference tourneys
The winner of the NIT gets an NCAA bid. This would replace the play-in game.

That way the NIT is the ultimate play-in/redemption story. You're mad you got screwed by the committee? Win the NIT and get in the Big Dance.

No, because then you won't have that 14-18 team make the conference tourny run to make it the dance.

that idea is stupid....all teams already have the ability to play their way into the tournament and eliminating the conference tournaments would result in less teams playing their way in. This ends up in more questions then the current system. Plus, there are serious timing issues with your idea.

i think eliminating conference tournaments is a great idea

think about it, the regular season champ of the mid major conferences is usually the best team in that conference, so it would provide a better chance for upsets in the NCAA tourney, instead of some fluke team that won the conference tourney

Conference tournaments make money and that is the sole reason they won't go away. I love the ACC Tournament almost as much as watching the NCAA's. If the ACC Tournament were to cease I might stop watching college basketball. By the way crowning a champion over a reg season isn't how the final champion is crowned. It's via a tournament where everyone has a equal chance at getting their foot in the door. Winning a tournament to get in, and then winning 2 mini tournaments to get to the final four, and then winning that to get the big prize. If it went by getting rid of the conference tournaments get rid of the NCAA Tournament and let the AP crown the NCAA Champion.

The conference tournements are the way teams can win their way into the Big dance.

The current system is fine. Who cares how relevant the NIT is? Thats not its purpose.

A few questions, where do you put the team that wins the NIT? Do you have them play a 1 seed? Is that fair for a one seed to have to play a team that just won 4 games in a row? I like the idea, but there are problems with it.

Pretty much. Thats why I like conference tournies. Gives everyone a shot, and with unbalanced schedules you can't crown a true Reg Season champion. Which is why I think UVA got lucky with their seeding as did Duke. UVA had a easier ACC schedule, and Duke did not. That's why Duke got a higher seed than normal not only that had some very good OOC wins and no bad losses.

Idea to Make the NIT Relevant Again

No, marijuana was not involved. Just my brain being jacked up on Mountain Dew. Don’t get me wrong, I love conference tournaments as much as anyone else (ACC and SEC are my favorites). That’s why I put the disclaimer there. In some conferences, every team in the conference plays everyone in a round robin. And that should have been one thing I should have added but forgot to. All of the conferences would play round robin to create a level playing field. So all of the teams do have a chance to win their conference, and teams would get their proper seedings in the tournament.

Also, the NIT winner would not play the number one seed, that would be pointless. I would pit the NIT winner (on a Friday) against the so called last team from the major conferences to get in (this year for example Stanford, Illinois or Arkansas). Makes the 8-9 game or 7-10 matchup a little more interesting.

I wanted the NIT to be relevant again, because back before the NCAA Tournament became the Big Dance, teams wanted to win the NIT and go play at the Garden. Here's a quick link to that:

The official home of the NIT Championship features tickets, college basketball news, rankings and scores.

I don't mean to make you feel dumb or belittle your ideas or intentions, but most college basketball fans, old and young, realize that the NIT used to be a lot more prestigious than it is now. You're not really telling any of us anything we didn't already know.
