    '09 Recruiting Discussion

Now that the recruiting classes for the coming year are finished for the most part it's time for a new thread.

What early commits does your squad have?

UConn has two commits so far, 5-star PF/C Alex Oriakhi and his AAU/prep school teammate Jamal Coombs, a 6'7 SF rated as a four-star currently.

Oriakhi is a strong, physical dude. He should fit in well at UConn and in the Big East. He actually verballed to UConn over two years ago.

Heard a lot of mixed things about Coombs, it he will most likely be a role/bench player at UConn. He verballed to UConn almost two years ago.

Those kinda extremely early verbals concern me.

Villanova has commits from three players in the top 65:

          4* PG Maalik Wayns
          4* PF Mouphtaou Yarou
          4* PF Isaiah Armwood

Jay is bringing in some size to go with what will always be a great guard rotation. When it is all said and done, will be a top 5 class.

Temple is getting notice from players and they got one in 3* SG Khalif Wyatt so far for '09.

St. Joseph's has a commit so far in 2* PG Justin Crosgile

La Salle got a commit from 2* PG Nurideen Lindsey

And Penn is still in it with some 3* players. They always somehow get their players to compete.

'Nova, Temple and La Salle are all still in it for Philly 4* center Aaric Murray.

            Re: '09 Recruiting Discussion

Indiana has 4 verbals commitments for the class of 2009.

Maurice Creek is the head of the recruiting class at the moment. A 6'5 guard from the East Coast, Creek had a really good summer AAU showing that seen him move up in the rankings from around 140 to 59. Should come in right away and see significant minutes, if not start. That could change if some of the newcomers this year really come in this season and assert themselves as starters.

Bobby Capobianco a 6'8 PF from Cincinnati whose height should really help on the inside next season. I guess he worked on his perimeter game this summer but, really at 6'8 on what will probably still be a height challenged team next year, I hope he ends up spending more time in the paint than roving at the 3 point line.

Derek Elston 6'8 SF/PF is one of 2 incoming instate recruits coming to IU next year. Elston is a holdover from the Sampson staff as he verbal last year to IU. Elston will probably be a solid wing player under Crean and will probably see time at PF even though he is probably more suited as a SF. Elston missed the summer AAU season due to a knee injury but, he should be healthy in time for high school ball.

Jordan Hulls a 6' PG is the other instate recruit and Hulls is actually a in town recruit as he attends Bloomington South High School. Hulls seems to be the prototypical Indiana High School basketball player in that he might not be the most athletic player but, he gets by with basketball smarts and scrappy play. Looks to be the floor general point guard IU has been missing the last 5 or 6 years, at least I really hope so.

IU has one more open scholarship to give for the class of 2009 but, the general consensus among IU fans is that Crean will oversign by one since it would be shocking not to see at least one transfer after this season due to so many newcomers. Someone is bound to be unhappy and leaving.

Glad to see the ACC doing well though. I miss the days of a ranked matchup each week for the Heels.

And he definitely isn't a 3 star. The dude is the number 1 ranked player according to rivals. It will be a huge get if Baylor is able to get him though.

You're right. I meant. A.J. Walton, not John Wall.

Another No. 2 spot for Villanova's class so far. Very good. Jay seems to doing really good with Cheek and Murray, from what I read.

Looks like Brandon Jennings situation had a bigger impact than just his career...

All-world point guard Brandon Jennings, the No. 1 player in the 2008 ESPNU 100, struggled in his attempts to score high enough on standardized tests to be eligible to play at Arizona for the upcoming season. Instead of waiting for the results of his last attempt at the test, Jennings elected to pursue a professional career overseas with an eye on the 2009 NBA draft. Many people will pay attention to how Jennings fares with his professional team, Pallacanestro Virtus Roma, based in Rome, Italy. He could start a trend of talented high school prospects spending a year in Europe before taking their games to the NBA. Jennings' decision capped off a tumultuous period at Arizona, during which the Wildcats endured a number of dramatic changes on the coaching staff. The Jennings saga even led legendary Arizona coach Lute Olson to swear off recruiting the vaunted one-and-done player. The Wildcats saw a number of changes on their coaching staff, starting most notably with the tumultuous relationship between Olson and assistant coach Kevin O'Neill, who took over last season for Olson when he took time off to deal with personal issues. As Olson returned to the helm, the Wildcats announced that O'Neill would not return. O'Neill has since taken a job with the Memphis Grizzlies. Former Olson players and longtime assistants Miles Simon and Josh Pastner both left the program while another former player, Reggie Geary, returned to the fold.

These changes had significant impact on the Wildcats' recruiting: Top 2009 prospects Abdul Gaddy and Greg Smith both decommitted from the Wildcats and talented 2008 prospect Emmanuel Negedu asked for a release from his scholarship and ultimately ended up at Tennessee. Furthermore, some Wildcats, including point guard Nic Wise, flirted with transferring. The Wildcats rebounded in a big way during the summer evaluation period with commitments from talented 2009 prospects Mike Moser, Solomon Hill and Reger Dowell, and in the 2008 class with Garland Junkins and Darnell Shumpert.

Crean just received IU's 5th verbal commit for the class of 09 during a home visit in Alabama to 6'7 SF Christian Watford. Watford a 4 Star recruit on Rivals chose Indiana over Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville and Memphis.

Indiana is now out of scholarships for the class of 2009 but, will be getting a visit from Dominic Cheek and is still looking at few big men as well. I fully expect Indiana to take advantage of the Big Ten rule that allows you to oversign by one and either bring in Cheek (will be tough to beat out Villanova for him though) or somebody who can play inside.

I originally thought IU's rebuilding process was going to take 3 years but, with the class Crean is bring in next year IU should be very competitive next year. Not national championship contenders but, they should have a good shot at the NCAA's (barring the NCAA doesn't hammer IU with a 2 year postseason ban) which would be quite the accomplishment given the circumstances. Now, if IU can add Cheek in with next years class things will look even better for next year. I have to say I'm been extremely impressed with Crean in his first 5 months at IU.
