Shabazz Muhammad declared ineligible by NCAA

UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad has been declared ineligible to participate, UCLA announced before its season opener Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.

Muhammad, the national high school player of the year last year, was found to have violated NCAA amateurism rules after a lengthy investigation.

"In addition to other pending issues, Muhammad accepted travel and lodging during three unofficial visits to two NCAA member schools," the NCAA said in a statement.

The school, which will appeal the decision, said the NCAA did not specify a number of games Muhammad has to sit out.

"The NCAA has finally determined that a violation of the NCAA amateurism rules has occurred involving UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad and his family," the school said in a statement. "As a result, he is ineligible for competition at this time. We are extremely disappointed that the NCAA has made this determination.

"The University and our compliance staff have fully cooperated with the NCAA throughout this entire period, and we believe the decision is incorrect and unjust to Shabazz. UCLA will expeditiously pursue its options to challenge this determination. When a final resolution has been reached by the NCAA, we will swiftly communicate the news to the entire Bruin family."

Man, I really wanted to see him play this year too. I wonder if he'll play next year or try to go pro.

Well I hope he doesn't try to go pro because he certainly won't be ready and teams will draft him low in the draft.

Enes Kanter didn't play in a game for a year and he still got drafted 3rd, Shabazz will be fine.

So all he did was accept lodging & food on unofficial recruiting visits? Hopefully they don't keep him out like Kanter(which was bs) & let him play like they did with Shelby.

It's more than just lodging and food.

It's the family's relationship with the financial adviser.

I don't like Shabazz nor UCLA but the NCAA are foul for this. They let this drag out until hours before game tipoff and then they don't even state how long he'll be ineligible for.

Part of me thinks this is NCAA paying back UCLA for past transgressions (Reeves Nelson's stories) because it's clear that they're making an example out of them.

Yeah, even if Shabazz doesn't play a minute of collegiate basketball he can enter the draft and still be drafted very high.

Shame on the NCAA for dragging this out so long.

I think with a up roaring of the fans. And if Shabazz keeps his nose clean he will be cleared to play like Selby and others before him.

the ncaa is bull.... of course they worked overtime to clear Shabazz Muhammad, but they sit on their hands and delay the process as long as possible on two separate occasions last season and keep a Ryan Boatright out for a total of 10 games for a less severe infraction.
