Man the Catholic 7 got a huge tv deal offer from the new Fox Sports Channel:

The seven Catholic schools that plan to leave the Big East to form their own basketball conference expect to double their money off a television deal, according to sources.

Catholic 7 to keep Big East name and add Xavier and Butler.

The Catholic 7 schools are expected to start their own league next season and will keep the Big East Conference name, sources told ESPN. Joining the Catholic 7 schools in the new "Big East" this fall will be Xavier and Butler, sources said.

Crieghton as well to be team 10. Notre Dame may also stay with C7 if they can't go to the ACC for 2013.

So the C7 keeps the Big East name. Didn't expect that to happen... There's one interesting wrinkle to this: the old Big East and the unnamed new conference have only four members in common (UConn/Cincy/Louisville/USF) which means the "Mountain West rule" doesn't apply and the new conference doesn't get an autobid.

It makes sense if you think about it. The Big East was formed back in the day for basketball reasons. The teams moving on for basketball reasons should keep the name.

As a Xavier fan, I'm pretty excited about all of this.

Re: Conference Reallignment: the Basketball edition

So is the Big East football conference going to keep the name as a separate entity? I'm confused.

And UConn and Cinncy are ****ed.

I haven't heard anyone bring that up until now, but, no, I don't think that is going to happen. They're keeping the commissioner but will have to come up with a new conference name for the group of UConn, Cincy, USF, Temple, Memphis, etc. And, yes, UConn and Cincy are screwed until the ACC gets raided and some spots open up there. Ohio State will never allow Cincy to join the BIG and UConn is really off on its own. The ACC would make sense for both though. I still think every conference needs a membership cap of 10. Football can still have their conference championship games with the top 2 teams and everybody plays a conference foe once each. It's fair. Basketball can have a home-and-home, round robin 18 game conference slate. Again, fair. Never going to happen though.

If MD wants to drop football, yeah, that might work. But I'd have a strong feeling that Georgetown would block a football-less MD from joining up. The new league will likely stick to private schools with no FBS football. They could get a wild hair on their butt and add VCU though. It would be a great add from a basketball standpoint with no football but totally against the whole private school thing.

As long as Big John is still alive, even prior to going to the B1G, it'd be a long shot before Maryland-Georgetown end up in the same conference.

Hell, it's been difficult as crap over the years just trying to get them to schedule a home and home with each other.

Western Kentucky to C-USA is official.

This sucks for the Sun Belt as WKU was their premier basketball program with a Sweet 16 as recently as 2008.
