    (I wish for) NCAA Change Proposal: Rule of Five

    I really cannot stand seeing mediocre Power Conference teams making the tournament. I'd much rather see a Monmouth or Saint Mary's make the dance, rather than a 6,7, or 8 team Big School getting in instead.

    So my wishful proposal is called the 'Rule of Five'. First, you must finish in the in the top five in order to make the conference tournament. #4 vs #5 in the play-in game. All conference tournaments are subject to this rule.

    A maximum of five teams are allowed in the in the Big Dance per conference.

    I think this would make for a much more entertaining post-season.

    Oh God no.
    This wouldn't do what you think it would.
    It would just make all of the major conferences get in 5 teams each year.
    It wouldn't mean more smaller teams would get in.
    You could just mark it down each year that if you finished in the top 5 of a major conference you would get in.

      NCAA please appoint Jay Bilas ASAP

      • Tournament selection committee would meet prior to the conference tournaments and rank the top 68 at-large teams.
      • Teams that win conference tournaments receive automatic bids. If that team is not one of the 68 teams, the lowest-ranked team in the field of 68 is knocked out.

        Besides why would anyone want to mess with the way it is?

          His constant bashing of the NCAA gets on my nerves more than the constant mistakes that the NCAA makes.

            No, the maximum a conference could get in is five. It is not automatic a power conference gets five.

            Bids by Power Conferences this year:

            ACC = 7
            Big Ten = 7
            Big XII = 7
            Pac-12 = 7
            SEC =3
            Total = 31

            Under the 'Rule of Five' the total number would be 23 (max. 25 if you decided to award two additional bids from the SEC)

            So 8 teams from other conferences could be selected.

            Under this proposal:

            Out: Pitt, Syracuse, Michigan, Wisconsin, Baylor, Texas Tech, Colorado, USC

            In: Monmouth, Valparaiso, St. Mary's, San Diego State, St. Bonaventure, Princeton, Akron, UAB

            Also, it makes the regular season much more significant.

              I think the tournament is great the way it is. Saint Marry's didn't play anyone so they deserved to be left out. Monmouth definitely had a legit case and should have been in. Every year your going to have someone who should have been in.

              There doesn't need to be a cap on how many a conference can get in. The smaller conferences need to fix their conference tournament setups if they don't like their regular season champs being left out because they got upset in their tournament. They could cut down the number of teams in their tournaments or give your regular season champ a bye to the finals.

              The selection process probably could be tweaked a little. I think the RPI has to much credence.

                It does but that's the only upside to your idea. It ruins the conference tournaments. And I don't see why having mediocre small schools is better than mediocre big schools. Why should a team be punished for playing in a tough conference and lose out to teams that played cupcakes all season?

                In your scenario 2011 champion UConn doesn't even make the Big East tournament. Watching the best player in the country lead his team on a crazy run is more fun than watching a couple teams nobody heard of.

                  only letting 5 ACC teams in would be a lot worse than a couple mid majors not getting in.
