How to take control of off-ball player on offense?

I realize the in-game tutorial shows you how to pull off moves while controlling the tutorial's off-ball player -- but it never tells you how to take control of an off-ball player in the first place.

    How is this performed?

So I'm dribbling upcourt as my PG, what do I press to turn into let's say my SG off-ball, so I can try and call for screens and get open and call for the rock and basically "run plays" off-the-cuff when nothing's happening.

So there's off ball controls in the game but you can't actually take control of an off ball player? This is SO whack

I think those controls are for MyCareer. I've been trying to figure out myself but I don't think its in the game. Pretty lame.

On current gen you can control an offball player but there is no way to get him the ball when you want to so it's pretty much useless. That would need to be looked at by the devs.

EXTREMELY LAME! I have no interest in any modes except the standard NBA game (head to head). I don't know why this continues elude the game.

Mike Wang had the perfect off-ball controls in NBA Live 10.

2k12 had wonky off-ball controls, so I skipped it and 2k13. I assumed it would be a no brainer that they'd get this together after my 2-year lay off.

            SO DISAPPOINTED, AGAIN

Thanks for the info. What good is it at all then? How is this not a glaring flaw? Such a simple feature, yet it vastly opens the game up for any and all possibilities.

Re: How to take control of off-ball player on offense?

On paper (literally, in the instruction book) NBA2K has had similar, or nearly identical controls to Mike Wang's off-ball control from NBA Live 10 since Wang returned to 2K for NBA2k11 - but they've quite literally never worked.

Mike Wang's offensive offball controls in NBA Live 10 in my opinion, were the most innovate, fun, realistic addition and implementation to any sports video game since I started playing in the late 1980's. (see Mike Wang personally demonstrate these controls here) I'm not waxing poetic here when I say this feature was no short of ground-breaking, and as someone who knows how to play basketball for real more than the video game counterpart, it was EXACTLY what I needed to meld my advanced real-life personal playing experience and NBA know-how into my video game execution.

It let's you play "real basketball" and seize opportunities in real time, and more importantly an organic, unscripted reward for making basketball decisions, reading and reacting. If I had to sum up my urgency in one sentence for this feature it would be this: It was one of the all-too-few sports game moments where you can proudly proclaim "I DID THAT!"

That's what this issue is TRULY about: having real-life know-how give you a step up. An experienced real-life player or long-time NBA fan should translate into an advantage, if only for that one possession/opportunity if presented. That was true evolution. Mind over matter. Real-life know how translating into 2-points. Making the smart move should trump mastering "the code" or the video game. I thought we were really moving forward with that!

I remember playing online, seeing a defender slacking off my slashing two guard - so I'd take control of Jason Richardson (2010 mind you), cut through the lane, call for the ball and lay it up.

Or I'd take control of Grant Hill, call for a screen, run to an open spot, call for the ball, and drain the open 15-footer because that's what I saw on TV when I watched my Suns. That's another part of this whole thing for me - it's honestly just wanting to recreate what I see in real life.

This feature was the biggest reason I could recreate what I saw on TV against opponents. Additionally, it just adds the ability to "create a play" while freelancing.

It let you create unique, organic, one-of-a-kind plays and on-command. Every situation completely unique. It's an option drenched in REALISM that lends itself to REAL basketball. That's why it was fun, because it let me play in real time.

It was like listening to hair-metal and Boy George for 10 years and suddenly Nirvana comes on the radio for the first time. It was like "holy crap, I didn't know we needed this, but now I can't live without it. This is the only way!"

Not trying to whine, I'm just extremely passionate about this feature. It is SO important. As a full grown adult and parent, I'm not going to lose any sleep over this, and over the past 12 hours have started to accept that this may not be in the game. All I ask is that Beluba acknowledges that yes, this is important, and should be an upcoming priority.

^^ This is probably the video you were looking for. The one that you linked to didn't have any demonstration.

Well, in MyGM mode you can choose a "preferred position" in the options, so if you choose center, you'll usually be off-ball. And I guess plays give you a little indirect control over off-ball offense members. But you're right, 2K14 doesn't have a way to change control on the fly. Would be nice.

I only play head to head so this comes as a huge letdown.
