Re: Team Building and Trade Logic: Your Ideas

And to further the idea I presented and others presented about personality badges for teams you could also integrate the idea into ownership goals. From what I've seen from doing various sims owners are firing coaches on rebuilding teams, expecting them to win immediately. The 76ers fired their coach in December. Magic fired their coach in January. When a team is tagged as rebuilding or given the "personality badge" they wouldn't feel the need to fire a young coach during a rebuilding year(s). They should give him at least 3 years to help get the rebuilding team into the playoffs and into contention. If he fails then fire him. Same goes for a team like the Mavs who would make the playoffs every year but never deliver (until they obviously finally won.) What I'm trying to say is if a team has been making the playoffs year after year, but has failed to be significant in said playoffs, the team should can the coach.

Also while it doesn't exactly connect immediately to team building directly, I would love for more staff(specifically) coaching staff to be implemented. Teams usually have the Head Coach, an Associate Coach, and then a couple assistants.

I believe a team that is out of contention should look to unload high priced veterans for picks and set up for cap space.

Teams making a push should trade whatever future assets for now.

Post patch I notice no trading at all occuring. I have seen one to 2 trades happening throughout the year...way too few.

Edit: after simming I noticed cpu teams do not trade with themselves during the draft either. They offer the user trades, but no trades ro move up or aquire picks. This needs improvement. Draft day ia always big for trades in the NBA.

It happens occasionally actually. But it's mostly end of the first round to the middle of the second round.

Have you tried with a new mygm post patch 4? I have run 4 separate sims and have yet to see one. Before the patches there were 2 to 3 draft day trades.

Positional stacking kind of irks me. It has been discussed before, but year 3 of mygm and I see lots of it. I like to look at things in a sense that everything makes sense in a certain way, but Joel Embiid, DeAndre Jordan, AND DeMarcus Cousins? All 80s on the clippers? Why kill all that cap room? Usually I can make some sense of trades that happen, not a ton of issues with that but this fa stacking can get weird at times.

One cool thing I have noticed is that when teams put themselves in those awkward situations they DO make a general effort to get rid of one of them. I've been offered a D.Jordan trade at least 4 times lol.

I've noticed they still offer human team trades, but don't complete cpu to cpu trades.

Re: Team Building and Trade Logic: Your Ideas

Leftos, I think you pretty accurately captured in your original post how much it is a subjective experience for each user. You could replicate the behaviors of some of the more well-known and longer tenured GMs and owners in the league, but there are many moves that happen in the NBA that can be real head scratchers no matter how much we think we know. So my first suggestion is to make it customizable. I'm not talking 30 team control, but more like sliders that you can adjust at the start of or during your career. You could control things like how often superstars get traded, where they get traded to (only big markets/anywhere), where they sign.... things of that nature. This way, everyone gets what they want.

With that said, you still need to have a default logic in place. I liked one suggestion that said to have different stages for each team, such as Rebuilding, Playoff Contender, Championship Contender. I think you could refine this even further by factoring in market size, number of all-star/superstar players, and how long the team has been rebuilding. By this I mean, teams like the Lakers, Knicks, and Mavs will very rarely go into rebuilding mode. They will always spend and always look to sign or trade for superstars. They would have to consistently fail for several seasons in a row at this strategy to switch into rebuilding mode and start shedding contracts.

On the other side, small market teams would need to reach some kind of "tipping point" to really put in all of their chips and try to make a title run. Look at a team like Milwaukee. Just because they got an 8 seed in the playoffs last year, didn't mean they were ready to start spending. Now they are right back in total rebuild mode. A small market team needs numerous all-star or borderline all-star players, who also happen to be either still on rookie contracts, or for some reason or another have signed to reasonable contracts, whether that be out of loyalty or playing in their home town or whatever. In other words, a small market team is only going to realistically make two kinds of trades: trading away a young talent they can't afford, or trading for mid-level veteran talent to add to a young core that is close to pushing through.

it gave me the option to trade Dirk with a 22million cap hit and samuel dalenbart to the thunder for ibaka and perkins. that trade speaks for itself.

I started a pistons mygm on thursday. I finished the season yesterday and ran through the off season. As I wasnt in playoff contention and near the bottom I traded Josh Smith, Monroe and Jennings. I got back picks in return. During the draft I was offered 5 trades and there were 3 cpu o cpu trades. So the trading is still there for me. There were a bunch on cpu to cpu trades during the season as well. The problem is trade logic and position stacking like someone said.

Less stacking of players at same position especially if they all same overall rating.

If a team has multiple players that can play multiple positions that should could look to fill that another position of weakness or at least add a different type of player at the position.

I don't need scoring guards or rebounding centers who can't score without putting rite under the rim.

I'll understand position stacking if the player ends up playing their 2nd position. But that doesn't happen. They end up staying on the bench.

One thing that I would like to see happen in Free Agency is I would like to see the big names sign first. Most teams would wait on a Lebron on Carmelo before moving on...

For example, in my current MyGm Carmelo waited pretty late into Free Agency, but ended up getting a realistic deal for around 4 years / 81 mill. Albeit, it was from Cleveland, but that's neither here nor there...

Now Lebron waited until the very last day to sign and I guess most teams already used their cap room because he ended up signing with Chicago for 4 years and just under 10 million.

If those guys signed in the beginning and dictated Free Agency rather than the other way around, then that should help alleviate situations like happened with Lebron.

What about different coaching philosophies? Defensive minded teams like the Bulls or Pacers would try to pick up defensive minded players in Free Agency or trades. Or teams that like to get out in transition would look for players that like to get out and run. Kind of like Madden with the schemes. Different types of players would fit different types of schemes. Maybe some players don't fit in well in a certain system. THATS when players would take morale and ratings hits.

So every coach would have a system, and players would either fit or not fit that system based on tendencies and ratings. AI controlled teams would go out and make trades and sign FAs to fit the system. The only exception would be Elite players, because I'm sure everyone would like to have a Lebron or KD on their team.

Id also like to see players market value be based on production, rather than OVR rating. Throw in advanced stats per 48 minutes, something to allow us to better see how a player is performing/underperforming, or even find diamonds in the rough that are ready to step into bigger roles. If there was a way that the script could evaluate a players production, and his temperament (as far as whether he wants crazy amounts of money or not) to determine his market value, that would be perfect. But I know thats probably insanely difficult.

Kind of a tough concept to explain.

I also like the idea of team goals. Rebuilding, Playoff Contender, and Championship Contender. Teams should evaluate themselves around the trade deadline based on where they are in the standings. Rebuilding teams would trade away their star talents to the Playoff and Championship contending teams for draft picks. Playoff contenders could go either way. Either trading away their star talent for picks if they aren't in a legit position to make the playoffs, or trading away their assets for players to help them make a playoff push. Title contending teams would trade away their assets to get talent to compete right away.

As the simulated years go on for MyGM, roster construction AI really shows its limitations. You see a lot of position stacking, and it seems every team is strapped for any semblance of a big. I know bigs are hard to come by, but it gets really thin as the years go on. And then if a team's overall 75 28 year old big with C potential gets hurt, there's no one to back him up. Maybe the auto-generated draft classes are just too heavy on SG's and SF's.

I literally played a game last night where the opponent starting PF was hurt, and a smallish, SF/PF started in his place. I hammered that match up, and that guy fouled out to start the 4th Q. His replacement? A PG. Then a SG.

At the start of the 4th it was a 3 point game in my favor, back and forth and tight all the way. I won by 19.

CPU AI roster construction needs work on a lot of fronts, as the thread has noted, but position stacking needs to be addressed along with the rest.

The 2 biggest changes I would like to see are:

                                1. The computer needs to value their draft picks better and have it be more adaptable depending how the season is going. I also think having more excitement via headlines or story lines about draft prospects would be cool. As of now scouting and the draft feels pretty lame. With the scrutiny guys like wiggins and parker are facing and the controversy of teams tanking this year it would be cool to see stuff like this better represented. I was able to get 4 of the first 10 draft picks including picks 1-2-and 4 with the raptors. I know the easy reply is to say that a human player should just not do those trades but a team like cleveland should not be trading their first round pick for Lowry with his expiring contract and kyrie as their starter.

                                2. I really like the trade finder option but I kinda think it needs to go. Just pick anyone on your team and go through the offers. There are at least gonna be 1 or 2 that are out of whack. The real weird thing is that the cpu will offer you something then when you go to the trade screen and edit the offer, get rejected, then change back to the original offer the cpu now decides to reject it. Also 3 team trades are out of whack and rarely work. Ive tested it by offering stuff that would pillage my team and greatly benefit the cpu and getting rejected. Ive then gone to both teams and offered the same deal but individually and have them accepted. Im in favor of more how the show does trades with an interest meter you need to fill. It mostly takes away the cpu making a bonehead offer that it shouldnt be doing.
