So maybe there's a way to choose similar to choosing an open legacy or career like in CHoops 2K where you could just pick your team and go be an NBA guy from the jump or you could choose a legit career mode path that gives a more realistic experience?
That works as well. I will say that it was a bit tedious because they had no variation, the combine, summer league, and training camp featured the exact same format.

The Summer League for a more realistic experience should have high shot tendency guys, players looking to make the league just jacking up shots like a mad man. Make those games more about the individual success than the team success.

Training camp would be 100% about the team. Brought it up in a previous post have a play running part even if you don't play with plays on just so you get an idea what the coach wants from you when you are out there and what your role is.

Instead of having X amount of 5 on 5 games just go back to the College Hoops series where they would have the fast break drills and have things like that. Have your guy work on boxing out, defensive position. You can also throw in some scrimmage 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 as well but just make it different than the simple 5 on 5.

How you preform in all those drills would help determine your role on the team come the start of the season.

This honestly makes me excited, I'd rather be a nobody and become better then MJ then be expected to be good and drafted high.

I'm a sim head...not a casual fan, but I also like to have fun...and the angle they are shifting to is a little more up my alley tbh. A lot of great suggestions above though to kind of find a happy medium..can't say I disagree that some parts do get a little corny, lol
Upon further reflection, I agree, I believe a happy medium would be right on target. As much as I loved having Summer League, D-League, etc., I'll fully admit their format in 2K10 was a wee bit tedious (which is why, if they ever returned, I believe the option to simulate should be available at all times).

Still, I think there's a ground between training camp monotony and 2K14's cringe-worthy corn fest that made up the vast majority of their cutscenes and storyline. I'd have to do a bit of brainstorming but there's got to be a better way. As you alluded, I don't think it has to be mind-numbing repetition versus vomit-inducing dialogue.

The problem with BAP modes is the lack of authenticity in the journey. Game designers make it so the goal is to get better the easiest way possible. They have slim lined the mode so much for instant gratification they striped the most rewarding part of the mode.

Skill points are the biggest culprit in making MyPlayer stale. There's no reason I should be able to practice jump shooting and be able to improve my on ball defense it makes no sense. Progression should be natural and realistic. You don't go from non athlete to elite athlete.

Creating a storyline does nothing for the main causality of why BAP modes becomes boring so quickly. All the story mode in 2K did was make it cheesy and kill any kind of replay value the mode had.

Number may not tell the whole story ,but they never lie either.

Re: Not sure if old but Steam providing a little info to 2k15 MyCareer

I'm going to take any Steam description with a grain of salt after experiencing both really spot on descriptions and wildly off-base descriptions.

With that being said, here is what I hope:

My hope is that 2k will allow two different starting branches to our MyCareer players.

The first I'll call the Dante Exum model - a relatively unknown commodity that originates from outside the system. This start would allow you to schedule up to 3 private workouts with teams of your choice, and it would limit any involvement in pre-draft events like a Combine. Based on your workouts, one or more of the teams you work-out for would then agree to target you with their draft picks.

In this storyline choice, you are a summer hold-out, not signing your rookie contract until pre-season workouts are under way for the team you were drafted by. You then go to your team's workouts and your performance there determines your role on your team when the season begins. This could mean anything from reassignment to the D-League all the way to a Starter role.

The second storyline I'll call the 2k10 model where the basic framework is lifted from the original MyCareer mode with the addition of pre-selecting your background: College, Overseas and Street-Ball Summer League Tryout. The purpose of the background selection would be to determine your OVR rating beginning floor.

If you chose the Overseas background, you start with a higher OVR (75ish) but you sacrifice age and top-end potential, being "acquired" by a team via a trade, which had "stored" you overseas until this year's season. You then begin the season as your team's 2nd slot for your chosen position.

If you chose Street-baller, your OVR is lower (55ish) and you begin your career in the D-League at the age of 18. Your potential is maxed out but this will be a grind to eventually be the GOAT.

If you chose the College background, you input your target draft range (Lottery, 2nd tier, 2nd round) and your college career highlights (1-4 years, number of NCAA championships, rebounding record, etc) and then you play the current pre-Draft Stars vs Elite "Rookie Showcase" to determine specific slot you are drafted in. Once drafted you go to the team's summer-league team and everything proceeds how 2k10 did.

Tbh, the medium is basically what everybody has already said. Just playing games becomes tedious(just like doing the same missions in any other type of game would) and being too scripted and cheesy doesn't work for a basketball game. If they could balance the two then they'd have the standard bearer for BAP modes.

Drills and practice mini games need to be there and improve attributes(drills that are specific to the thing you are doing).

Money needs to return so endorsements matter and working towards a big contract makes sense. This is where having a version of "The Crib" return where you start with a small apartment and can work all the way up to a mansion. Having those crazy prices already on headbands and arm sleeves would make sense, not to mention they could now add furniture etc. You also can pay to train with legends to improve(remember that from last gen) etc.

The story should be a bit more engaging, so, I hate to say it but maybe a bit more linear if they go that route(ala The Life mode in Sony's game). If not, then take the cheesy out and just focus more on the side of things an athlete does. I'm fairly sure having a one on one game with Jackson Ellis at a commercial shoot couldn't be too hard(ala Bird-Magic). Doing the mocap for 2k if you get the cover. Perform dribble moves while camera crews take pics for magazine covers, etc. Stopping by a Pro-Am tournament in the summer at Venice Beach/Rucker Park/Small Indoor Gym(Drew League). Catching a few news reports on yourself after achieving certain things. Actually doing tv interviews after you schedule them with your agent. On and on and on.

There are ways to do it, and they've been done before. Just have to find a way to blend them together so it's:
                  a) Less tedious
                  b) More engaging
                  c) Exclusive to each different player

I have never been able to get into the whole "MyPlayer" thing. I tried it, but I gave up on it pretty early. Like REAL early. I made it to the point where my teammates made me wear that clown nose. That was it for me, haven't touched it since. The problem is that it doesn't feel like my story. I stunk it up in that showcase game, and I still went 8th or 9th overall to the Pistons; who already have two really good, really young centers. The cutscenes are cool, but just have different branching options. Present us like 4 different "options" on how we react to whats happening. Then have the story and cutscenes change depending on that. It's my fantisy. I want the option to be a squaky clean guy like Shane Battier or be a talented, but complete douchbag like Stephen Jackson or Latrell Sprewell. Have the story dynamically adjust to my actions.

                      Just to add:

-Pre-game in the locker room. Get to change jersey, accessories and shoes before the game starts.
-Maybe the ability to change lineups? But if not at least defensive matchups, i.e if I'm the teams best wing defender, put myself on their best wing player.
-Prime opportunity here for some recorded coach speech as well. Get the team focused on the matchup or specific opposing star player.

                      *Edit

Btw lakers24 if you keep dropping all these ideas for MyCareer, you might need to gather them all up and drop another monster thread like the other one haha. I had done one last year but it got wiped, and I didn't have it saved
That'd be a sweet way for them to FINALLY incorporate a menu before starting your games. It could work the same way quick game/MyGM/Association start game menus would but now it would use the locker room as a backdrop.

Lol, I have a ton of stuff I've gathered over the years of MyPlayer/MyCareer since it's inception and I may do one. I had a thread a while back that I typed up and lost myself. I was beyond pissed haha.
