Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
I play MyGM by just being a GM without really playing games on court. I use the SIMCast and gives me the thrill (I know, its low but hey having fun).
Anyhow, if you focus on individual skills, does that affect your team general stats. Like for example, my Team is weak in physical defense and shooting, will these increase too? I am just new in this mode, but Im liking it.Comment

Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
I second the notion that you should set the training by player type instead of individual skill training, particularly for young underdeveloped guys.
I tend to set the intensity to LOW or MEDIUM for vets, HIGH for young rotation players, and VERY HIGH for young guys who hardly ever play. But, this also depends on their traits, which is something I pay attention to for those who may not respond well to intense training.Comment

With such a player, you have to train him according to that type, or train in an individual stat which means they will not really progress overall and stunt development. However, as long as they are an elite rebounder, they will likely still be the "rebounding" type. This means that the player will never be able to both progress properly and flesh out his other skills.
Demarcus Cousins is a fantastic rebounder. I played one season and his overall stayed stagnant--he actually decreased statistically (age 24) across the board but his rebounding increased to max numbers to offset it. I'm very curious to play out the next season and see if he actually gets worse because his rebounding can't really increase now.
Noah Vonleh is listed in the game as something like a faceup scorer. His midrange is reasonably good for a rookie big, and it's not unreasonable to think he could develop a decent 3 ala Bosh. However, the game lists him as a "rebounding" player type, so a few years into his career I noticed he became an elite rebounder, but he showed no real improvement in his offensive stats.
It's going to stink no matter what that players developed by the cpu will be put into these neat little categories and all develop the same way. I mean, it's absolutely no fun for immersion but cpu variation would be harder to implement I imagine. What's really unfortunate is we cannot set a player's training ourselves to that of another player type, or even change the player's player type. A player is locked into becoming a certain player the day we draft him, unless we are willing to stunt his development by balancing him out a little, one attribute at a time.
I am going to do a bit of testing, and among other things create players with max of certain attributes and see how they progress. Hopefully I am pleasantly surprised, because right now I'm under the impression that the current progression system (for other reasons too, like ridiculously sharp career decline including shooting and iq attributes) is pretty flawed and can kill a user's experience. The new injury system is exempt from this of course; 2k did fantastic work with that.
I like the new player types and how they affect player's roles and overall rating. What I (really) don't like is the way they are incorporated into player training.Comment

Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
You can change a players type, but that will also stunt their growth because they the Player Type they are given will give them a higher rating than if you give them a player type that will improve their weaknessComment

How can you change a player's type? I spent a good while looking around but there didn't appear to be a way to do so.Comment

Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
Originally posted by zroberts1991This is spot on and I've been saying this for awhile. There will be no big men that can shoot a out move your way through the years as they never develop shooting. You'll watch kevin loves shooting drop hard because he'll be trained as a rebounding big. They need to mess around with this, there are no two way or purely offensive bigs as the system skews the player type way too much to rebounding. This is one thing I don't think should be too hard for 2k to address. Bigs need to develop shooting, they do in real life. Channing frye couldn't shoot threes well when he entered the league and now look at him. Look at how lamarcus aldridge and Anthony davis shooting have progressed since they've been in the league!
Anyways, re: the progression system...looks like Kevin Love is about to regress as a shooter
He has nowhere near the shooting prowess of the incomparable Evan Turner at the same point in their careers
I'm assuming this is because Love is a "rebounding" player type and Evan Turner is probably "offensive" or "outside scoring." Evan seriously improved his outside shot while Love actually lost his shot during his prime years. Instead of being relegated to being a jump shooter late in his career (what will likely happen irl), he's going to wind up losing the ability to shoot at all.
I'm surprised he was still this good overall at age 31, though.Comment

Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
So I have a question guys, in the training section of MyGM, once you select a player you can either train him to the default player type, or you can select one. It seems like the player type is selected based on the highest compatible percentage of all the listed player types in that position. Even though some have VERY HIGH and HIGH compatibility for multiple player types, it seems to default to the highest one, even if it's 0.1% better than the second best option.
So, and I haven't tested this, is it possible to change a player type by forcing them to train to a different player type?
The Kevin Love example, if you forced him to train as a offensive PF would the type of progression/regression be reversed? Would he improve shooting but by age 31 have dropped severely in rebounding attributes?
I'm just wondering because progression seems screwed but there might be a way to mitigate in the short term.
I still hope this could really be a focus of any patch 2K releases for the game. I'm taking it slowly with MyGM because of this issue right now.Comment

For attributes within a discipline, (outside shooting and inside scoring are both tactical or fundamental, can't remember which) you cannot improve both at the same time. Though with the current system, even if the user had more flexibility in trying to develop their players the cpu would be doomed to developing one dimensional players.
I have seen far too many faceup/scoring bigs become Rodman-level rebounders while not improving their midrange game whatsoever. I'm with you, this is killing the experience for me and I can only hope for a fix. There are plenty of things that 2k franchise modes have always lacked, but this is especially frustrating since it's new to this year and we weren't expecting it.
I would also like weight to actually affect the appearance of created players as I'm sick of 300+ lbs big men all looking like KG, but that's another gripe for another day/thread.
Edit: I'm wrong! (and happy to be!)

Re: Advice for player development for MYGM/MyLeague
This gives me another reason to consider 30 team control, to help avoid the Kevin Loves of the league become rebounding-only players.
I can't believe I overlooked it, I thought I had looked everywhere.Comment

Wow...no idea how I didn't see this! This makes me much, much happier than it should.

Right now I've got John Henson who defaults to rebounding C, but he's also VERY HIGH for defensive.
I like your thought on 30 team control because it seems like the AI default may progress players inefficiently.Comment
