There are some issues with this game, that is for sure. Defense still feels like it is always a step or two behind the offense. Passing can be brutally frustrating at times, and the off-ball behavior of CPU-controlled teammates can often be mind-boggling.
However, most of the people who play 2K stink on defense. Some of that is linked to the controls, but not all of it.
The biggest thing I've noticed on defense is how "delicate" and/or precise you need to be with the left and right sticks. If you are one of those guys who jams on the sticks to the point where you hear nothing but "click-clack" sounds...you are going to struggle mightily on defense.
I feel like defense is very realistic in 2K15 - the problem is offense isn't. There are still too many overpowered offensive tactics that break the game and turn it into something that resembles NBA Jam when put in the hands of a cheesy player hellbent on turbo-ing around like a lunatic.
The offensive side of things has been dumbed-down and made easy to appease casual players. That's the biggest issue.
Why bother learning how to do any of the dribble moves and shot types when you can just turbo side-to-side until you get an inch of space to shoot a jumper? Sadly, that is what the majority of players feel.
It feels like certain exploits are left in the game to serve as a CRUTCH for the average casual or new player. I'm mainly talking about the zig-zag nonsense and the overpowered turbo.
That said, most players don't spend anywhere near the amount of time practicing their defensive skills that they spend on their offense.
Personally, I've found that I like to turn Defensive Assistance up to 100%. At first I thought this would give me less control, but after getting used to it - it now feels like I have more.
One tip I read here at OP a few months ago before I was a member that really helped was to focus on your defensive players feet/footwork. This really helped me. When you start to get a feel for how your player moves his feet, you realize that you don't need to bang on the sticks on defense. And doing so actually is what makes you slide around and get out of position.
Some people might argue that this is a control issue, especially since you can jam on the sticks and still have complete control on offense most of the time. But that is because offense is overpowered and dumbed-down so casual players can pick up a controller and just start pouring in points with Harden, Curry, LeBron, and Durant.
If they forced you to be precise and delicate on the sticks when controlling offensive players and out-of-control movements were "penalized" with turnovers they would get nothing but complaints about the game being too hard. However, this is exactly how the game works on the defensive side of the ball.
One wrong slide or step on defense leaves you open to getting smoked - very much not the case on offense, that's for sure.
The one thing they really need to fix is the turbo/zig-zag stuff. I actually like the shooting since the last patch, what I don't like is how EASY it is to simply hold turbo and sprint left, right, and even backwards just to clear an inch of space to get an open shot. Even great defense has a difficult time stopping this.
I don't get why 2K feels the need to make it this easy to get open shots. Especially since they've put in all these other moves that allow you to create space. Making it so easy to get open by simply holding turbo and zig-zagging ruins everything else they've built.
When you make it so easy to get open playing that way, the game just starts to look like Double Dribble or Lakers Vs Celtics. On top of that, making it that easy to get open gives players ZERO incentive to actually learn the moves and skills to create shots.
Why bother actually getting better and using the cool features 2K has put in the game when it's super-easy to just zig-zag and launch J's?
