GTA and 2K are both essential parts to American Culture, especially hip hop.

No ****? That is one of the reasons why the budget is so immense and why this such a ridiculous comparison. What's next? 2K vs. Fallout? 2K vs. The Elder Scrolls?

Saying that NBA 2K sold on par with Grand Theft Auto V over a span of five years does not make it "just as big" as Grand Theft Auto. There are only a few gaming franchises that can stand up to Grand Theft Auto, and the NBA 2K series isn't one of them. It's like comparing a cruise ship to an aircraft carrier.

We are strictly talking units sold and the cost of development every 5 years in comparison with NBA 2K and GTA. I'm not sure what's so hard to understand,.

but since 2K11 theyve mostly served us poo poo platters and expensive
          coasters.

I think consumers are a little more wary then ever before especially
over all the backlash after last years release. Sports gamers started
to question the company as a whole as theyve stopped making NHL,
          MLB and Tennis games.

I think the last few years that automatic trust a lot of gamers have had
has started to break a bit.

The good news is the dev team seemed to know internally that the
product that they released the last few years was substandard and
they seem to be dropping the hammer this year.

I dont think any dev team is more connected to their fans then the
NBA 2K dev team and it seems they took the backlash from the fans
seriously. Almost every announcement has been fan requested and
          music to our ears.

But to many people theyve been burned by 2K marketing before so
we'll see if they are apprehensive to comeback.

For me the new classic teams sucked me in this year but if the game
is disappointing again I'll probably retire.

I thought this was a poem at first glance.

But to be on topic, yeah. Top-notch companies will usually be on the same level. GTA is such a big franchise and Rockstar handles its games so well that it's destined to make such a vast amount of sales. As 2K becomes more fan-oriented, then they will see the same result.

If you do the math then in a 5 year time frame NBA 2K is equal in sales to Grand Theft Auto. Even more interesting is the fact the NBA series may be more profitable considering the astronomical cost it takes to develop a GTA title. GTA 5 cost 265 million dollars to develop and advertise http://www.ibtimes.com/gta-5-costs-2...roduced-report.

Dude your logic is flawed. So if I average 5 points a game for 6 games straight that means Im as good as Lebron who just went for 30 in 1 game? and less minutes?

I see what you mean by sales but the title may be a little misleading. I've played both for most of my life and honestly 2K isn't even close in terms of how big it is compared to GTA.

NBA 2K series just as big as Grand Theft Auto series.

                The differences between the two:

                1. NBA has a smaller market, but that market is quite dedicated and stable. It averages more like 6 mil a year and that's not scratch.

                2. NBA is a licensed game while GTA is a wholly owned IP. There is less fees and royalties to pay.

                3. GTA's development cost are INSANE compared to NBA.

                4. GTA has periodic DLC that gives it something of an "annual release" revenue stream.

At the end of the day, GTA still dwarfs most games anywhere outside of games like WoW and LoL. But Take Two is in good shape with the lineup of these two games plus Bioshock and Borderlands.

That's totally not the point and you know it. But even so, if Lebron get me 30 in 1 game and zero in the other 5, I have a 1-5 record. He doesn't help me. I'll take the guy that's gonna get me something consistently.

I agree with 99% of you said except for #2. While NBA 2K is a licensed product so is GTA in a sense with all its music. We are talking hundreds of songs. That can't be cheap. NBA 2K has music but nowhere near the amount. When I say 7 million I'm more looking at the trend since 2K11 and how it's only gone up since then. They did in fact sell 7 million units this past iteration. I don't perceive that as changing and wouldn't be surprised that if 2K can get it's global numbers up even more which there is tons of room to grow there as the NBA's global popularity is growing tremendously every year, this series may eventually see annual sales of 10 million units. Before anyone says I'm crazy for thinking that remember no one fathomed 10 years ago a basketball game (NBA 2K) selling on pace or more then a football game (Madden). The sky is the limit for NBA 2K.

Note that I said GTA pays less. Not zero, for sure as you have a great example. The rights to use songs are actually minor in comparison as the game serves as a delivery vehicle for the songs. Some would argue that the record companies should pay them for the exposure. And the way these works isn't linear. The rights are bought "in bulk". The more songs you use, the less you pay per song. I would be shocked if GTA paid anything above low six figures for music rights. Music doesn't sell that game, so spending too much for it isn't justified. But I could be wrong. And NBA doesn't go cheap for music. 3 DJs this year, Ferrell, and JayZ (who we KNOW, wasn't cheap).

This wouldnt make any sense to multiply the units sold in one year over a 5 year span. Yes 2k may sell 8 mill copies a year. But understand a good % are of those sales are reoccurring customers. Meaning people like myself buys the game every year. Gta releases 35 million buys this one game. 2k releases sells 8 mill but a lot of those people buy the game every year. Cant compare at all really.

But no one is comparing audience. The discussion is overall financial impact. And the math applies. a 5 year game selling 35 million and an annual title selling 7 million a year is the same. Math doesn't lie. For the bottomline, this game, in some ways, is as important to Take Two as GTA.

Very touchy subject because it's subjective but IMHO, I don't think it is. Gta is more memorable especially Vice City which was the first one I started playing back in '03/'04. I didn't start playing 2K until 2K7 (my favorite) in '06. Both games have different types of pressure to come through with a great game. I'm completely aware that Gta is every 5/6 years while 2K is every year but imo, games like 2K12 and 2K15 have put 2K behind Gta who seems to be releasing a great game every time with the exception of Liberty City Stories, which I never liked. GTA obviously has the greater longevity and could still be played years later. I remember people were still playing GTA IV in 2013.

Difficult to compare an open world game to a sports game but again, imo, GTA >> 2K.

But most users that buy 2k, buy it every year, so there's only about 5m fans or so. GTA V sells to 40m people....
