I don't know why anyone here is complaining about the review, you already went into the review with the thought process that ign is not hardcore enough to give a valid opinion, no need for the circle "you know what".

Just don't watch the video or read their reviews.

The phrase "or you can be yourself" is something Spike Lee said in the latest trailer, which perhaps was poorly stated. Any story is inherently limited in scope and perspective, so "Be Yourself" is likely not a promise an story-line could live up to universally.

Personally, I have always approached these modes from a "Be the Story" template. The immersion for me has always been more of from a third-person movie perspective than from a first person -this is actually me- perspective. So I guess for me, even though that family does not resemble mine and likely nor do the experiences, there can still be immersion in the story/path itself.
I don't want to derail this into a "how I would fix MyCareer" thread, so I'll leave it at this:

The scope and limitation of the perspective is already set within the NBA backdrop. In the first few years of MyPlayer, despite its flaws, people were able to fit much more closely into the kinds of player archetype they wanted to be. Since current gen began, 2k has opted for a path of giving less choices to the player under the idea that it allowed them to create more content.

This is categorically untrue. There is a way to design this mode with cutscenes, voice acting, immersion AND freedom without locking yourself into an infinity of branches and content that people would never see. It requires a lot of thinking and planning, but the issue is that 2k isn't trying to do that. They're moving in the direction of Fight Night Champion.

That's enjoyable as a side thing, but it doesn't reflect the experience of creating a player and making the tough on court and off court choices that simulates and dramatizes an NBA career.

I like hearing any new reviews about a new 2K game.

That said, IGN are not to be taken seriously when it comes to Sim Basketball IMO.

But of course, I'll hear what they have to say. I'll bet they don't touch on offensive and defensive depth which is the core to me....

Looking forward to the OS review.

Didn't IGN give a bad review one year saying 2K was TOO realistic? 😂

I get it a lot of gamers just want to play a casual fun game but they have the wrong type of people writing these reviews sometimes. Just because you aren't good at a game doesn't lower its value.

This seems impossible, (I'm a game developer, and I know first hand how much effort goes into scripted game sequences.)

They cannot provide freedom in a story driven mode without having to make an absurd number of scripted sequences, and personally I don't want that much of their team to be taken away from the core of the game improvements.

I'm going to cut this reviewer some slack.

He sounded really nervous and unprepared, which doesn't seem like it was his fault. It's like they said "Ok we're going to do a review preview right now. Give me a few talking points to push the conversation forward first and we're going to talk for an entire quarter." Plus, nearly half of the last 3 minutes of the video is just random things you'd say to your buddy on couch. Things like "Oh!!" and "Oh man!!!" and "Toni Kukoc?!?!??"

Anyway, if you go to IGN or Gamespot for your sports game reviews....... well......... that's probably not a good idea.

Regarding the level of analysis or stick skills of these guys... well, it's already been said.
Gameplay looks solid, although one sequence (@ 5:15) had me a bit disappointed, when curry slides Pippen back with a layup animation despite pip being in prime position to defend. This is a legacy issue in NBA2K, probably has to do with collision detection and is probably hard to rectify 100%, but i still hope we won't be seeing much of this...

I'd honestly like to know how 2k would be able to pull out a Mass Effect style story mode (when the story always ends up as you in the NBA) on a 9-12 month game cycle. That seems next to impossible. Also, Mass Effect 3 cost $40 million and 3 years to make. I'd be very surprised if NBA 2k has that big of a budget every single year. I understand you want a great story mode in your NBA game, but I think you might be asking too much of a game whose main job is to get the NBA gameplay and feel correct. Story is a distant 2nd.

Plus, was it released that we wouldn't be able to pick our race and exactly how we look? I must have missed that news if it was.

I expect this review and others in the mainstream to echo the #HYPE #SLOGAN and #BUZZWORD campaign that 2K is busy waging in the new media.

Can they meet their deadline for the review and adequately experience the multiple modes of play to a degree that they know more than what was given down 2K's show-and-tell marketing?

Do the reviewers even know the basic requirements needed to experience the improved ai (both defense and offense) in MyCareer?

These types of reviews love the #HYPE and the #SMOKEANDMIRRORS.

The MyCareer of 2K10 did this by setting the stage (Draft Combine, Summer League, D-Leage and NBA) and then letting each actor create their own show. Ending up on the NBA was not guaranteed.

Your point about the budget is very silly as well, considering that each year 2K brings in AAA names like Spike Lee, Jay-Z and Pherrel(sp) ...

Also 2K really isn't on an 18 month schedule but more like a 36 month schedule with asset updates on the superficial level. If you follow actual system deployment and mechanical usage you'd see a 3 year cycle being common for 2K's team.

Spacing in the Triangle looks like it's improved.

How can you dictate anything in a mycareer mode. You would have to purposely run out of bounds and foul out to not make the nba in 2k10. Either way your forced to play games, the story is just a plus. And with all the extras they added, this is probally the best career mode from 2k.
