    Re: Let's Talk Online Lag...

I know the servers have been a mess for a loooooong time....but they honestly werent much of an issue for me this year...I didn't experience a heavy amount of lag...just some stuttering at times. Im honestly a bit surised to hear people still having such a hard time...

A lot of the movement issues I chalked up to the actual game mechanics....not what I would consider input delay..

      Re: Let's Talk Online Lag...

I've only experienced lag when my internet was acting up. Normally I'm running between 90mbps & 120mbps download. On certain times during the day the channels may be clogged and my speed drops and this can cause some lag.

Maybe instead of blaming 2k for your lag issues you guys need to upgrade your internet speeds.

And as far as the battlefield 1 Server comparison goes.. that experience isn't even near perfect. The menus lag crazy while you're in a game.

        Re: Let's Talk Online Lag...

I think most of the blame needs to go on the Playstation servers. I haven't played 2k on Xbone or PC so I can't really speak to them but I notice lag a lot more when using my PS4 than any other system.

I can play shooters on PC via WiFi and my ping will be in the teens, but when connecting to anything from PS4 the ping is invisible but I definitely feel a delay in my input compared to playing offline. This goes for games other than the 2K series too. Maybe my launch-day PS4 is showing its age

Some lag is inevitable, but playing this game on and offline is like night and day. The timing for everything is different and the responsiveness you need on the court just isn't there for me. I'm glad to see that not everyone is having these input delay issues, but they do exist for at least some of us.

Download speed isn't the only factor in ping. In fact, you can have a lower throughput but a better ping to servers.

2k servers are only based in virginia USA afaik. Im not sure how many copies 2k sold in europe/asianetc... but i would assume its significant enough to warrant 2k to have more servers in other countries? The only reason this page is struggling to stay on the first page is probably because most forum users here are in the US.

Im sure the lag for 2k players in the US isnt that bad. 2k players outside the US arent asking for an amazing lag free experience. WE just want it to be PLAYABLE.

Let me put it this way, 150+ ms ping is just garbage. 300ms lag for us Australian players just SMH

From my perspective (100 mbps optic fiber, wired connection) its safe to say nba 2k is more laggy online than the average modern online multiplayer game, by quite a margin.

Been an issues since this generation of systems for 2K. I agree with everyone, the input delay feels as though you're playing on an old Plasma TV (gaming in sand).

The difference between offline and online play is so striking, whereas when I play something similar like Madden...hardly noticeable.

NBA 2K15 was almost unplayable at times due to the lag. It was so bad that it was practically an entirely different game online. 2K16 was much improved, but it can still be much better. How the heck can I play a 16 player free-for-all lag-free but 2K can't give me 5 minutes of choppy-less gameplay for a PNO game between 2 players?

                      Re: Let's Talk Online Lag...

Anyone saying this game does not have server issues is either living in a different reality or a completely biased fan boy. 2K has been notorious for its abysmal servers for years. I love the idea of proam but trying to play as a walk at one point I was getting disconnected from the game more times then I could play a full game and I ended up shelving it for months. The input lag was significantly improved online over previous years but it is still a far cry from offline smooth. Try doing a quick dribble move to evade a rushing opponent in the back court just to have the behind the back or spin come out a second later then you anticipated and put the ball right into a defender. You have to learn the game online vs offline to have success at higher levels and keep turnovers down. Online you learn not to make some of those tighter passes, which moves to avoid a drawn out animation, and how much space you need to get off a clean shot. Hardcore players have been clamoring for improved net play for years and some of you guys on here saying there are no issues are a slapping long time faithful supporters with concerns in the face.

2K has major server problems. The delay is absolutely mind boggling, no other game has a delay like this.

                          Re: Let's Talk Online Lag...

15 was no issue re input lag; 16 was good until about patch 2 or 3 then it immediately became problematic. It was so bad at one point that I had to take a break from 2k online play for about 2 weeks.

In an effort to resolve the input lag I obtained a gaming monitor and use game mode. I purchased a new router that I no longer use. The issue seemed to clear for unexplainable reasons or at least dissipate because it's at least playable now.

The one huge detriment for me is the input delay in my dribbling animations. I basically could have a 99 speed and 99 ball control and it would feel like I'm about 75 speed and 75 ball control because I am so limited in my control over how timely the animations are playing out.

My ping from a computer or hand held device is exceptional (single digits) but the ping from the Xbox is in the 90's. I'm not aware how to bring this number down albeit I have researched this topic. The ping on your gaming console is basically a ping to a specific test location so my ping to this sever is clearly experiencing interference.

Input lag for me is like trying to perform tasks on a computer system or hand held device that is severely bogged down - it becomes a heavy task just to use the keyboard.

My rig is setup under cable to cable both between network and provider. I have a DMZ setup for the Xbox that basically opens up all ports between router and Xbox for rhr Xbox assigned ip specifically. As a result the NAT is open and my Upstream speed is 30Mbps. In experience, I can download as high as 3MB per second when downloading torrents.

I know I have the speed and resources (single Internet user) but I'm baffled as to what contributes to the input lag. I've opted to remove the shot meter so it appears after I release my shot.. all in an effort to use visual cues moreso than muscle memory timing lol. I can also confirm its an isolated issue because around the time the game became laggy after a specific patch: my my career experience no longer felt smooth and so I now play on at least 70 game speed to compensate.

It's not like my friends I hoop with experience the same pangs albeit I'm in Canada and they USA. It's definitely an isolated issue but how does one fix it within their power without the help of 2ksupport? It's not empowering to hear others suffering the same input lag pangs and not one gamer in this purgatory has a course of action for resolution. I feel at the mercy of the game - I don't think a 1gigabit transfer rate is the salvation for this struggle.

Game inputs seem laggy because it's extremely dependent on animations. No freedom until the animation finishes

All sports games are P2P. Majority of lag is caused by someone playing on McDonald's wifi from 100 miles away. It just takes one person to ruin it for everyone

2k's netcode could use improvement but it's passable. Much better than what it was years ago

I don't think that's the case. There can be lag in the simple action of shooting. Shooting involves, yes, the jumpshot animation but basically any action in any game involves an animation that, for some duration, is "unbreakable."

There is also "frame skipping"/"teleporting" due to lag, and can occur when just moving in a straight line up the court without any sort of dribble move animations beyond the simple running animation.

It seems pretty clear that the problem lies in either inefficient net code for transmitting user input to server and propagating it to both/all users, and/or sub-optimal provisioning in terms of either hardware, bandwidth, or number of servers themselves.

All this said, I feel like the situation has been much better on 2K16 than 2K15. With Gauntlet, things feel very smooth almost all the time. When I have a lag issue, it's not so much input lag as it is momentary fits of teleporting. In a 5v5 game, it's a bigger issue, but was almost always at least "okay," and definitely better, on average, compared to 2K15.

I'm surprised you can say 2k doesn't lag. I'd go as far as to say that's a ridiculous statement, and my net has always been good.

Live had some good non-lag games but it was dependent on host. I remember playing Live on PC way back and when you got like less than 100 ping w/ someone I could make 90+% FTs w/ the t meter w/ anyone in the game on the hardest difficulty. If there was a tiny bit of lag, it became a lot harder.

2k isn't the kind of game that was overly responsive even offline so I think it masked lag, but a lot of the lag in 2k manifested itself in input lag or lost info (like swallowed button presses.) You would be in the park and say you get the ball and press icon pass then hit the button and you don't pass, that's lag because the input you pressed was not registered (where as you've done it thousands of times offline.) Things like that do impact the game when you play.

It has been a lot worse than it was in 16 tho. Still, sometimes in the park/proam it became super bad. Most people who complain about lag, who aren't just whiners/excuse makers, are people who have experienced gaming without lag... and thus most of them don't have bad internet.

Shooting when pump faking, not passing... I dunno if it would fall exactly under the umbrella of lag but it's server issues. I suppose it would be better for you to say "the level of lag in 2k never bothered me." And maybe that's what you meant.

Edit: however, don't complain about lag if you can't run a damn ethernet cable to your system.
