I wasn't in to games then. I'm old school though (38). I grew up playing Lakers vs Celtics and Bulls vs Blazers on Playstation 1. Ha! I didn't play any video games for years and just got back into basketball games a few years ago (2K15) and have '15, '16 and 17'.

But I always wanted a proper basketball simulation, even when I was 14. It's not an age thing, it's just a preference. I think a lot of "gamers" these days just want to "win" and "be the best" and that's why they play. I play for the experience. I don't care if I start as a crappy player in the D-League and have to work my way up. In fact, I prefer it. That's what some folk miss I think - the satisfaction of "winning" and being the best comes from overcoming struggle. Not by being "The Pres" from day dot.

2K15's "story" was the best out of the 3, but it would still be better if they just had zero story and let the game tell it's own story, supplemented only with social media and the in-game commentators and such ... just as long as it made sense. I.e. no social media comments about "Orange Juice owning the game" or "ThePres let us down" when you're rated 57 and getting 5 minutes a game off the bench (talk about demanding fans).
    Totally agree, bro.

Anyway, my point about NBA Live 10 was that it was one of the best "simulation style" NBA games ever. People were actually comparing it favorably to that older PC basketball sim (shoot, can't remember the name right. It might have been NBA Inside Drive or something? It was the gold standard for realistic bball simulation at the time and over the years). The game had all sorts of fresh and realistic ideas and data being used and led to some great experiences. I hope the next NBA Live game builds on that one. Then we can have some real choices and competition again.

Why is it unrealistic, though? 2K is a large company and has made a lot of money off the 2K series. Enough that could allocate resources to either split the current game to 2 different teams or even build 2 "new" teams to work on each game. I think what might be unrealistic at this point is expecting them not to rest on their laurels when there isn't any competition and just rake in all the dough they can. That's why someone like EA needs to step up to fuel competition again, IMO.

Not saying 2K is bad by any means but more competition would be great. I'd love to play a fresh, different simulation style game again that resembles the real NBA in gameplay, tendencies, percentages, etc. etc.

Re: 2K18 - one wish: no more cut-scenes.

The main thing is people complain too much because the game mode was better in 2k10, 2k11, and 2k12 but people complained that they wanted to make it to the NBA faster and it takes too long to start in a NBA game. The thing about having a story is that it keeps the game from being boring because not too many people want to keep playing games over and over...then you have people also complaining about not having enough cutscenes

I like the cut-scenes in the game but I hate that they make us have a dynamic duo just like i hated 2k14 with Jackson ellis as our rival...2k15 was the best one so far

So people want the drama and Soap Opera of being in the NBA but they don't want to play the games? lol!

Two different games, man. Let the Soap Opera one be all about shoe endorsements and finding a girlfriend, and let the other mode be for players who just want to play a typical NBA season with minimal frills and drama, more focused on realism and on-the-court action.

Both types of gamers would be satisfied, IMO.

            That would make sense.

2k has done a really good job of designing the basketball portion of a Basketball game (the controls, the atmosphere, the NBA models, etc.), BUT I'm not sure those skills carry over for creating a story-driven mode (or any mode really).

They made 1 game - the part that takes place on the court - and they tried to build a bunch of "modes" around it.

If they take the money/time/resources away from the Motion Capture Liftetime Movie and put it towards creating a new department of Game Designers focused on "make this thing FUN" - I'd love it. I don't even think it would be that hard to do....

Re: 2K18 - one wish: no more cut-scenes.

I like some of the cut scenes. They're literally the only reason I play MyCareer since I never play online.

This year there are just too many and you can't skip them, which is annoying.

I like the story at the beginning, but once my NBA career starts I'd rather they cut them back. I don't need a 10 minute cut scene to pick my shoe endorsement.

I'd wager that if people could earn attribute points and badges by playing online, then around 95% of people wouldn't touch MyCareer.

                    I wouldn't.

I feel like MyCareer holds me hostage... I am to the point where I really hate playing it.

They're trying to make it like an MMORPG, but MMORPGs let you level up in the game - you don't go play a separate offline mode to level up.

Get rid of the cut scenes, period. Waste of time on literally everybody's part.

Sort of off topic, but a few other things I think would be nice:

                      1. When picking in free agency, we should know or have a good idea who's going to sign with the team we join. It was annoying to join the Warriors only to find out Steph Curry left for the Clippers.

                      2. I think in 2k15, if you earned a certain status with your team, you could ask your GM which of the free agents you would like to play with and who you wanted him to pursue. I liked that a lot.

                      3. We should have the option to negotiate years on our contracts. What if I just want to sign 1 year deals?

Idk what the hell this guy is talking about. The cutscenes add immersion, plain and simple. I like a product that takes presentation seriously.

Yeah I don't really agree with this post at all to be honest. I agree that the narrative of the story and the cutscenes aren't the best and should be skippable. However, I like having there be some depth to the mode and background more than just grinding out games over and over.

There needs to be more variety and different angles/avenues you can go with the story. Not everyone wants to be "Freq" or "Pres" but 3-5 different options you could pick would be nice. If I want to stink and go to the D-League, let me. If I want to dominate college and be a Lottery pick, let me.

I would also caution you guys that some people do really enjoy MyCareer and like the story, if you haven't noticed it's the same 5-6 guys in here going back and forth. OS is great but don't take it as a good sample size of research.

                          Just my two cents.

If they add all these options they would no doubt have to create a separate game. Otherwise it's going to be this cheesy mode stuck in with the rest of the game modes.

But depth and background? If anything cut-scenes like this decrease both depth and background. You can achieve so much more by making it more open-ended, giving the player more options and not have to sit through cringe-worthy cut-scenes over and over. There are other ways to add way more depth and intrigue to the mode than just having it play out like an interactive movie where you occasionally play a basketball game.

Your last point is really far off IMO, I'm not sure if we're playing the same game but the cutscenes aren't really that long IMO other than maybe the first couple. The majority of this mode is playing ball on the court or doing practices.
