Re: Becoming a Post God - Post Your Tips Here

The up and under finishing directions are much more accurate this year. For example if you do an up and under then pull back on the stick he's most likely gonna do a fade.

If you point the right stick towards the rim diagonally, he's gonna do a step through. If you point stick horizontally left or right they will do a side step jumpshot.

So for the more accurate step throughs, point stick to rim diagonally.
    Lineup:
    PG) Gary Payton
    SG) '95-'96 Michael Jordan
    SF) Sapphire Scottie Pippen
    PF) '95-'96 Dennis Rodman
    C) Hakeem Olajuwon

I think they need to give a boost to hook shot success, just because you get a bad animation shouldn't mean that specific hook shots arent useful. I "labbed" or whatever you called it, last week, and i shot ridiculously low percentages with hook shots, in reality these elite post scorers should only be shooting this bad if they were forcing hook shots over double teams, but thats not the case, its 1 on 1 coverage, and in reality , guys like duncan, hakeem, shaq if left to go at they're defender 1 on 1, could shoot those shots with way higher success.

Re: Becoming a Post God - Post Your Tips Here

After extensive experimentation with a variety of players and moves in the post, the Dream Shake Fade is absolutely the most effective and consistent scoring option against the CPU. It seems to freeze the defender, no matter how good they are, allowing you the separation to get an "open" or "wide open" look almost every time. Here is my list of post scoring options, from most to least effective. Of course, the player you're using plays a large part in the success of some of these moves (badging, ratings, weight, height, strength and animations all play a part), but with all things being equal here's what I've found...

        1. Dream Shake Fade (hold L2 & R2 while pointing both sticks away from the hoop)
        2. Dream Shake Hook (either direction)
        3. Post Spin
        4. Drop Step (especially with a size advantage)
        5. Post Spin Shot (hold L2 and double tap square without touching the left stick)
        6. Post Fade
        7. Post Hook baseline
        8. Post Hook towards the key
        9. Up & Under (defenders never bite)

Update: The Dream Shake Hook is a beastly move that I didn't discover until today. I slotted it in after the Dream Shake fade, but it could end up being even more effective, per my post below.

100% agree with this...this is big for the post game and why I almost never get blocked from the post position. There are a ton of counters that you can pull off accurately.

I can't speak for any modes out side of Play Now Off/Online but there a are a ton of tools to dominate the post with IMO..

So I've just been labbing in practice.

When I get back I'll stream to YouTube and post it here going over all the little different things I've found in the post game this year.

It's more in depth than it's ever been. I'll describe every move with a timestamp.

I'm giving away my secrets, but if it's for the betterment of the 2K community I'll fall on my sword.

I will say this as a sneak preview. If you want to get seperation selection on your post hooks and your fades, you need to experiment with your left stick in the post while you still have your dribble.

Alright I'll share these two and that's it lol.

I'm really proud of what they did with the "face-up" game. Seriously guys. The face up game has finally return. The last 2k with a soild face up game was 2k12 or 2k10. I've been using Webber. At this point my cousin just hates him. When I get in the post. I like to face up and give my defender a few jabs. See if he's up par. My favorite move right now is the step back. It's really good against aggressive defenders who want stick to your body (which means they are pressing towards your body. Watch in the video below. I conditioned my defender to be aware of the baseline drive. Which I reversed dunked on him early on. You'll notice I back him down 2 times and then he jumps out to protect the baseline. But I know he's ready for that. So now I'm doing the step back to make some space. I try and up and under but he stays down. But remember they is still space between the defender and I. So he wants to get back to my body to contest any shot. As he steps in. I do a step through layup. And he's behind me now. Easy layup. If he doesn't step up. It's a spot up jumper.

                  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1VQucwO5KcA?start=80" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You'll notice in the clip before the above. I hit him with the shimmy left and then right. And then Hook shot.

But it's hard to teach yourself to react to these moves by the defender. Even I miss shots because I don't know the players release or my timing gets all screwed up. There is no one move that works. Or what people call money move.

I want to make a Dirk and Melo mid range post video. Hopefully I get a chance.

And the final thing you need to be aware of is help defenders. As much as you lock in on your defender. You have to be aware of the double team and your teammates being wide open.

Apparently I'm an idiot because I didn't even realize there was a Dream Shake/Post Shimmy hook shot until today. I was messing around and did it accidentally and woah...this is a top tier move along with the Dream Shake/Post Shimmy Fade and the Post Spin. I was abusing Draymond Green with AD on Superstar with this move.

Unlike the normal post hook in either direction, this move ends up "lightly contested" or "open" almost every time, and it comes down to timing the shot release. I love that you actually get release feedback on this shot. It gives the insight that many of the other post moves don't, and it's incredibly helpful. For now I'd slot this just after the Dream Shake/Post Shimmy Fade, but after some more experimentation this may actually end up being just as effective as the fade or even more so. I'm never shooting a regular hook again.

double tap the shoot button. it was in 2k17 too. thats your post shimmy shake hook shot.

you missed the hook in 2k17 a ton. but not nearly as much in 18. i still dont think the game respects jump hooks effectiveness. I think they do this on purpose. meaning, they know how effective the hooks are in real life but they can't allow them to be that effective in the game for fear of everyone abusing that move and you not being able to block it.

the problem with that is...jump hooks and fadeaways setup all other counter moves. without those two moves. your counters are more obvious.

The up and under still doesnt work that well vs real people .. Still too many body blocks when you fake a guy out of position. the will make you show the ball and stick it out so when the defenders comes down from the block animation. he is landing on the ball. The only up and under the works properly is when you do the initial part of the move with the right stick. Then tap the shoot button while moving the Left analog in different directions. there are all sorts of beautiful looking fakes when you do this. and it actually goes up, then around and under the guy. I said this is another thread. if you try this in your practice notice you will not get credit for up and unders. the true up and under as described in the directions is what registers when you try it in practice but does not work in real games vs real people.

Can you post a video of you playing in the post online or offline, iv heard you say a couple times that your able to dominate in the post, but in terms of back to the basket moves there arent many effective ones, the only time they really work is when your online and your defender gets way out of position and you can hook shot it in, but im interested in what ways your dominating in the post.

There are plenty effective moves bro...I think you're just a bit too focused on the hook shot itself....

I'd be glad to post some though, I pretty much save all my replays now that we can use the post game score summary....

Try experimenting with the post drive and post spins . I’ve been using the post step back a lot lately . I get blocked a lot with the up and under : my he drop step is popular too.

Let not post that much info. Let these kids learn lol. Or at least watch YouTube of these classic players.

Anyone saying the up and under doesn't work. Isn't using it right. The up and under shouldn't "just work" That is the beauty of the post game. The up and under only works when the defender jumps towards you. If he just jumps up and down it won't work. You have to recognize what is happening. If the defender just goes up and down. Then use fade away. These kids just want the one more game over. That's scary. 2k literally hands you a army swiss knife of moves.
