Re: NBA 2k18 Official Player Lock Thread

Hey guys! Great thread, any awesome ideas flowing around here. I had a few questions, just out of curiosity:

-How do you guys determine what attributes you start your CAP with?
-How do you guys determine when and how often to update attributes?
-Does potential have anything to do with development? IE- If you constantly update attributes individually, does potential even matter?

I've been using this program (listed below), it was designed by a fellow "Player Locker" and it seems to do well, but just want to hear additional ideas. It helps mimic growth like MyCareer within the player lock format. It actually has you put your player training as "rest" so that you won't progress without updating your attributes manually.

Let me know how you guys tend to role in-terms of updating attributes. No right or wrong with this, just ideas.

Re: NBA 2k18 Official Player Lock Thread

Nice program and analysis for its design! I typically let my player progress naturally. I always start off with a 6’6 PG with generational athleticism named Cooper Jordan (son of MJ). From there I will let his shot, handles, and defense, come along per usual. His shot is the what’s furthest behind. I’ll also put cooper in a draft class and simulate the first season of my league. Whatever team drafts him I will go to.

Just like in mycareer, I allow myself 3 free agent suggestions in the off-season, and 3 trade requests during the season. With customized slider sets, there’s no way for me to take advantage of the CPU in negotiations. I also will fire and hire a new coach of my choice prior to the start of the season.

I think potential will play a part into how much your player’s natural progression supplements your manual progression, but your player will likely surpass his potential with any manual additions along the way.

Great ideas! Agreed, the program does well but I’m seeming to progress a little too easy, just want a way to slow down so thought I asked for some ideas.

Really like the way you go about it! Seems solid to let our players progress naturally as well.

          Kobe's Return!

I bought back Kobe Bryant out of retirement to rejoin the Lakers.
Took the All Time Lakers Kobe, editted him up, Age 39, Ovr 76.

First game of the season, no one cares about Lonzo Ball's debut, all eyes on Kobe's Return. First possession of the game, Kobe launches a deep 3! Crowd gets up from their seats.... And he misses. However the next possession, Lonzo sets up Kobe with a nice inside pass for a easy layup. Mid way through the first Lakers are up 4, when Lonzo gets a steal and starts the fast break and finds a wide open Kobe in the corner for 3, Kobe hits the 3 and the crowd is going crazy, next defensive possession Lakers get a stop, Kuzma gets the rebound, gives it to Kobe, Kobe dribbles, gets in the post against Pat Beverely, backs him down, double team comes, Kobe finds a wide open Lonzo for 3! Lakers take the lead into the half by 13, however Kobe starts to fatigue on the court and misses 7 straight shots in the 3rd quarter, Lakers now trail by 2 in the 4th, Kobe only have 13 pts on 6-17 shooting. But in the 4th quarter Kobe starts to feel it again, he gets a couple easy shots to go in, and starts going inside and creating contact and going to the line. Kobe tries to take control but cant hit his usual tough shots. But he starts feeding the ball to Brandon Ingram and he comes through scoring 8 pts in a row and giving the Lakers a 4 pt lead with less than 2 mins left. Under a min left now, Lakers up only 1. Lonzo has the ball in his hands and starts to go inside and passes it back out to Kobe on the wings for a wide open jumper and he hits! Lakers get the stop on defense and Kobe gets the rebound and is intentionally fouled and he hits both free throws. Lakers win the game 106-101.

Kobe finishes with 26 pts on 37% shooting, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Kobe's return looks promising, can he lead these young Lakers to a success season and possible playoff spot and a chance to get his 6th ring? We shall see....

Thanks for the help. I'm in the offseason now and let the CPU handle the draft. Right now I'm in the moratium part of the offseason. I did start up a second myleague with the start today feature due to Cleveland's trade on the deadline. Think I will player lock using Paul George until the offseason and see where my created player gets drafted at?

Has anyone used an existing player before? Do you feel just as invested or is your own player better? Thanks for all the comments and interactions in with this post guys

I really haven't logged in near as much time on the current gens in my league as opposed to old gen 360/ps3 days but here's a few things I've always done as I've enjoyed player lock since 2k8 at least.

: Choose a journeyman type franchise team. Then player lock with a player typically teams star player or very important one. I then try to replicate his season averages to what he is doing IRL. I try this with sim/realism in perspective. Because obviously stat hoarding in a video game is easy cheesy LOL

I will use very difficult sliders , make it as tough as possible

              To answer your questions :

Back in the day I used to like to make my created player goat style (original Cleveland LeBron style) so I'd make a forward between 90-99 ovr I did this until about 2k10

Now a days I like making a archetype role player with potential.
              Things like 3 & D-
              - Raw elite athlete with a specific shooting strength/potential some where. (Rookie derozan)
              - Draymon build good at nothing but serviceable everyway
              - playmaker guard (young rondo)

              - low block star (typically would give him good strength & control but average /below average finishing ability) so basically the only things standing in his way from being that star is his shooting touch in the interior

              - lastly the old faithful sharpshooter (which most of these types really had places for me dating back to 2k10)

You’re roster and slider set are absolutely amazing on player-lock. I love just passing to my teammates and watching them play like irl. With the created player I use I tend to make an incredibly athletic 6’6 PG who can finish but not shoot. Moderate dribbling stats. High potential that relies on him gaining a consistent jumper to be the best player in the game.

For everyone that creates themselves or creates a young guy that's coming off the bench and work their way up, what overall do you make them and how many badges do you apply?

Really enjoying Player Lock on 2K18 on PC. Got me a Athletic SG with a solid mid-range jumper playing for the Lakers. I really like playing with Lonzo dude loves to pass.

                      I go by this criteria
                      70-75 = 2-3
                      75-79= 4-6
                      80-84 = 5-10

I came to conclusion that if I have over 10 badges I'm far too developed as a rookie .

Then based on my build is weight the badges .. If I'm,a shooting build at a 73ovr I'm going to use all Them on shooting badge or spark plug/ microwave

Been thinking about going back to my old ways and creating a player to lock on. Probably a playmaker pg...I just like to run the offense, play good defense and hit the open J when I get the chance, I never really liked creating a player and taking 30 shots per game lol...might try this one this weekend.

What are the rules you guys put on yourself for adding/removing badges as seasons progress? So, for example, if my player has hit lit 50 threes in the corner this season, at what point do I "unlock" Corner Specialist.

I also think it would be hard to "unlock" defensive stopper, right? Since in regular mycareer, it's about contested shots/good defense.

Love to hear you all's thoughts.
