I guess yes theyre correct? It just seemed a bit dismissive to me because I think if he knew what build he would enjoy playing as the most already he would just make that build. He wasnt even sure what position he would like, let alone archetype. Hes not looking for a shortcut because hes impatient about having a low overall, hes looking for a way to keep from getting FOMO on the tons of different archetype/position combos and find the motivation to commit to one player.

It sounds like over the last couple years you were able to narrow it down and figure out what is funnest/works best for you through trial and error. The question seemed to be to me, what do you do if youre not sure about your fav playstyle and what the funnest/most effective build for you is going to be?

Thats why i think your anecdote about being a young pass first pg who idolized shawn kemp helping you figure out your playstyle to be a lot more instructive for him than telling him to shutup and dribble lol you know what i mean?

I think you read way too far into my post. I assume he's been experimenting the last few years with builds, and he should have an idea what he enjoys doing. I don't believe I told him "shut up and dribble", not even metaphorically, so I'm not even sure where you're coming from with your post.

Sorry i should have been more clear, and maybe i misunderstood you - I was saying i thought your post was helpful for him, especially the last paragraph, just disagreed with the notion that the posts that said "just pick a player and stick with it" were the "correct" answer, and i thought you were endorsing that train of thought through a quote. My bad!

Assuming you wanna compete online, Def don't commit too early. Having a bad build as your only build or having to remake a character is terrible. Do you care about fun, do you have a mental playstyle that can be represented in 2k? Then by all means. Do you have no idea what that would be, then that's where it gets tough. It's bad to have a sub optimal player, as someone who mostly picks them because meta is trash, but you can still ball out and surprise some people. But if it's not fun either then it's like.. I dunno that rebirth feature would be cool but it'd be better like to 75, like before 75 you could remake and keep upgrades but after you couldn't.

I remember back n leeg when I used to play leeg I would jungle with sejuani(sp? It's been so long.) I wasn't even good at leeg (and imo that char was underrated as hell) but I remember one game a dude said in the chat damn ur the only op sej I've ever seen. So there's that for builds. I wanna show someone a build and playstyle that they've not seen and bust their *** with it.

I think a lot of my problem is that I like to do a little of everything. I can't decide if I want to be a lights out shooter, a slasher or even a 7' shot blocker. The way I play in real life my strengths are mid range shooting and inside scoring. After looking at the new badges I decided shot creating post scorer matches my game the best but in past 2ks I've used a pg because I've always been unselfish and good at setting up teammates. Maybe I am better off having multiple characters but I really want to grind up into the 90s

It sounds like we are really similar players haha, im big and versatile and the 2 archetype max nature of the game makes it difficult to recreate that. Im also a natural PF who ends up using PGs for the same reasons you mentioned - for what its worth i actually ended up at shot creating post scorer PF as the build i am leaning towards as well - they really boosted the ball control/passing and it has enough versatility to do a little bit of everything without sacrificing the ability to put some work in down low or protect the rim/crash the boards when needed on D.

At the very least it sounds like making VC will be ALOT faster so having a secondary character in the mid 80s as a change of pace may be more viable this year!

That's pretty cool how similar we are and that we deided on the same build. I'll probaly use the shot creating post scorer as my main and wait a little while to decide on a secondary one when I get bored

                  my best advice

If you know you will never hit 99 make a build that has hall of fame badges available from the jump that is closes to your playstyle

I ended up making like 8 builds last year, but for 2K19 it's all about the Takeover meter and the build with the best badges. After stumbling across a YouTube build by Solo QueFine and playing with it in the prelude, I'm sold on the Shot Creating Post Scorer at Small Forward.

99 Overall Key Badge List below:

Re: How do you choose an archetype and stick with it?

I made 8 myplayers last year. Highest one got to 93.

I plan to hold off a few days on making a myplayer if I can, and wait until the builders for points and badges come out. That way I can make an informed choice. Last year I was just guessing on what might work, not realizing that there were a few 'key' builds that got a lot of perks, like the 6'8" playmaking shot creator SF who got speed boost and contact dunks and no stupid badges, or that certain badges that sounded good, like lob city passer, which were actually worthless.

It looks like the new archetype system this year is going to fix some of those problems. but I'd rather not invest a 100 hours in a player I'm eventually going to ditch because it'll always be 2nd best, or worse.

Re: How do you choose an archetype and stick with it?

I have 9characters that are all viable on 18. They've all been upgraded to at least an 80. There's literally nothing i can't do to help the team win. Whatever we need i have one (besides a pure sharp, that's against my religion) and i enjoy that immensely.

However, i think i picked the perfect build for me this year. There's no telling if I'll make more players, pretty confident i will. But if he does what i want him to I'll be able to come back to him when we need a guard. I'm thinking of sticking with 2 players this year. A wing and a big. Pretty much besides point I'll be able to do anything. Only reason i won't make a point this year is i always create like 5 PGs. Gonna try and curb that impulse this year.

My bad, that wasn't my intention. Just been seeing these types of questions for the past 3 years.

My answer still stands, though. Best advice I can give is make your build based around the player you like the most/are best with in Play Now.

I started off trying to make a 1 of 1 Derrick Rose copy and now it's morphed into something completely different. You just gotta dive in and commit to the build.
