Re: We need to talk about illegal screens, screen animations and AI PnR defence

I see more illegal screens called in offline verse the computer, mostly on me for some reason. They need to fix how everyone in online calls for a screen and is rushing around it WAY before the screener is set, there essentially not really using the screen as in defenders dont get caught in the screen animation, but the screener comes and bumps defenders as the ball handler gets his momentum going, its just because the screener isnt set so the game doesnt call an offensive foul, because screen animations only activate when the screener is set, which is how the offensive screen foul gets called.

Illegal screens need to work properly cuz currently they don't cuz of these screen animations sucking defenders in. Sometimes I don't even do anything and get called for an illegal screen cuz the animation sucks the defender in. It should be done properly. If the offensive player waits until the screen is set, there should be no call. Only when the offensive player tries to use the screen early before the screener's feet is set, should there be an illegal screen call. Yes we said we wanted more illegal screen calls 2k, but we also want it done properly.

Is anyone getting that weird PnR animations where the screener "drags/pulls" the on-ball defender into the paint? I don't if I never noticed it before, or something happened online with the game engine in PNO games. My opponent will call a screen. Sometimes I'll switch to the big to defend the roll man, and I'll let just let AI go over screen, since they tend to do it better than me.

What ends up happening is that the roll man will start moving towards the rim. Somehow, the animation body blocks me, so I can't run past the roll man to contest the shot. ALSO, the roll man literally "drags/pulls" the on-ball defender to about the FT line area. I had several games where my opponent would go 3-7 possessions in a row where they're getting uncontested 3's at the top.

I've been experimenting with different defensive schemes, but at the moment...when the roll man starts to pull my on-ball defender towards the rim, my opponent is letting the shot fly which makes it EXTREMELY hard to get a good contest on the shot. I tried to manually use the on-ball defender, but then my opponent will call multiple screens and zig zag behind them to break loose from me or shoot as soon as I get sucked into (see above pictures) into the screener.

I understand that the PnR is a very important part of basketball, but why do players need a PhD in defending it?

Its really the whole screen animations thing man. The PnR system needs to be more free flowing and not something where too much control is taken out of the hands of players. When a screen works, it shouldn't be cuz I got "sucked into it" cuz of some animation, but more so that I got bumped and walled off by the screener. And this should only be possible by the dribbler closing gaps if I go over, or beating me off the dribble if I go under. Bumping into screener animations are ok cuz that happens irl, but there shouldnt be anything going on like now, where defenders are being sucked into animations and stuff. The whole PnR system just needs to flow better and more freely, with players controling most of whats going on.

Can't say I've got those animations, but I do get the jockeying for position animations when I need to move my center over to help a teammate who just got blown by. It's like the center thinks pinning the opposing center underneath behind the basket is more important than contesting an open layup. Thank god it doesn't happen too often. Overall, all of the animations restricting player movement (i.e. screening, on ball defending, battling for post position) seems incredibly unnatural and way too impeding. It's like trying to move away from a black hole that keeps sucking you in.

What irks me the most is, my guy sets a screen or is going to set a screeen and the cpu/ai player warps into it and my guy gets called for an illegal screen while the opposing ai walks around holding the screen until someone runs into it and they will ride you out of a play. Can we also talk about being force pulled into a screen that you clearly have an angle to avoid or the game making you go over a screen when you’re trying to go under, the weird animations that take place or the getting stonewalled by undersized players?
