2k did it back then because Madden had such a foothold in the market that they HAD to do it to get noticed. That's literally the only reason. And Sutton is right, it only worked because NFL 2k was amazing. If it was trash, nobody would even remember it existed. There are a ton, an absolute TON, of F2P games out there none of you even heard of.

NBA 2k, FIFA and Madden have essentially no competition, thus they do not need to go F2P.

The video game market is NOT changing as much as some of you think it is. F2P titles are not going to become the norm. Just because Fortnite and Apex are F2P and huge hits doesn't mean that type of business model works for every game, for every company, on every platform.

You guys wishing for this honestly better hope they don't make our NBA, FIFA and NFL titles F2P, because if you think the grind and VC are bad now, hoooooo boy, you'll be in for quite the surprise.

Look into the future a little. As consumers get used to FREE to play games and eventually have the expectation of downloading titles without paying for them, the market will gradually shift.

Also, this model (for popular games) puts the game in most likely millions more hands. Who knows if doing it this way would be less profitable. We are assuming it. That's why people are saying they would be crazy to do so.

So yes, this is very profitable and working RIGHT NOW. But will the market be exactly the same 5 years from now, and with new consoles? We will see

2k would essentially be taking away at least $500 million from their bottom line if they went F2P because just because they'd be losing out on sales from the copies of the game.

If you think they can earn that back by going F2P then you might need to do some research into F2P games if you think they're all just rolling in the cash, my man.

One of if not the biggest complaints recently about 2k were the ridiculous microtransactions...

F2P Games survive on microstransactions, so they usually have more microtransactions than non F2P games...

So Essentialy, you're suggesting we apmlify the biggest problem in the game, which would nullify whatever benefits could come from switching to such a model.

        If 2k see's this R.I.P.

To access shootaround, you must first purchase a basketball for 1000 VC
        ... But hey VC sale!!

          not just that.

free to play games just add to their existing game and dont usually have core overhauls if any.

quite frankly you would be playing 2k19 for the next 10 years with minor tweaks once in a while.

fortnite is the same game it was in 2017 lol
they just add cosmetic stuff and weapons and such.
it still looks and plays the same it was 2 years ago.

quite frankly sports games where stuff change on a season basis simply dont lean towards a free to play model.

I'm seeing exactly this in a F2P game I mess around with, Neverwinter. Once it went all out F2P there hasn't been a single new character class introduced in several years, just endless "class balancing" and more tacked on stuff designed to keep folks farming or buying micros.
