No game does on ball defense realistically live or 2k, live slows down the offensive player first step ability so that defense can adjust in time and uses larger forcefield to simulate player bodies, so either you want the game to adjust for user shortcoming which takes away some of your control or you want full control and you have to account for various issues including lag, and not just from servers but from our own display devices which people seem to ignore.

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
Nope.
There is tons of evidence out there from experienced players showing how a good defensive response will go to hell at the very last second because they got caugt up in a canned animation. Jumping at fakes or reaching fouls without touching anything.

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
Because holding LT in NBA Live essentially attaches you to the offensive player...there isnt really anything to read and react to besides the steal indicator that pops up...
This is why there arent a lot of organic blow by's in the game unless your playing a human who's completely out of position. Theres the "drive past you" animation or the defender stumble...
I feel like theres a trade off...I dont want to be attached to the offensive player and locked into playing animation chess, but I also dont want to slide around when trying to defend one on one...I think 2K16 was really good at this balance...
Live has been better at on-ball defense since before this was instituted.
In 2k if I go left, and the player quickly switches right, I can't simply move my stick quickly back right, my player will still be sliding left.
You don't have to attach players at the hip, if in Madden I can anticipate the offensive player's moves, there's no reason why I can't do so in 2k. Even if I anticipate correctly I go flying.
I have a lot of respect for your opinion though, let me shout you out at one of the more level-headed respected members around here.
I just wish, if a player was going left and quickly changed right, that I could do the same. Now if my player moved right, but the other guy had a step on me, that's one thing.
It's a whole different thing for my player to move an extra 3 feet to the left, before switching right, and players not being able to pivot and quickly adjust on defense. Even the best defenders in 2k don't do this.
People just get used to sliding, and finding ways to turbo back the other direction to get back into position.
I believe these are simply band-aids to fix a bigger issue.
If a player is faster, they should be able to beat me. If they are stronger, they should be able to beat me. But don't make defensive movement ridiculously impossible and not responsive for bad defenders just to adjust things. That's not right.Comment

Ideally, a light lock in “engage” using LT combined with good foot planting, read and react defense with fluid movement and user responsiveness is what we need.
Unfortunately we haven’t gotten that in a video game. Defense seems to be neglected.
It’s been at least 5 years and I still feel like the basketball game industry is lagging behind in realistic player movement and responsiveness compared to where they probably should be.
I want to feel light on my feet. I want to feel explosive. I want to feel my player accelerate and position myself to make a play on the ball using my stick. I don’t want to just go turboing towards a player and holding y the same with every player.Comment

There’s definitely a medium to be found. My gripe with 2k as a defender is that it’s so unresponsive and skatey. While live is more locked in, it’s more realistic to real life defense. The read and react to hesis and subtle shifts and momentum are critical. Sometimes over done. But the footwork and gist is much better. And you can get some organic blow bys in both games, but I still feel like they need to work on that aspect. Too often in both games it feels like an all or nothing switch with no gray area.

It hasn’t just been neglected, it’s been intentionally nerfed to make the offense easier.

I can't get open, because the defender is glued to me!
Why can't I hit CONTESTED shots! NBA players do it all the time!
I should be able to blow by my defender, because in the NBA NO ONES can stop Westbrook one on one!
NBA 2K just needs to make these fools play BETTER offense in the some way we're always told to "Git gud" on defense. It's like damn...how much more of an advantage does the offense need??? They can make moves on a dime. Shoot ridiculous percentages due to the shot meter and ungodly amount of badges. The number one way to generate offense in PNO is to call a screen on every possession, because the defender gets suck into screener like they're a freaking black hole. Your AI teammates makes stupid rotations while on defense, OR they foul the ball handler with 3 seconds left on the shot clock despite you having it under control the entire time. The 50/50 balls tend to go back offense. Offensive animations tends to "push" the defenders backwards, so good luck trying to get a charge. Offensive rebounding still tends to be lopsided despite whatever adjustments you make to stop it and that's presuming the d*mn ball does bounces out over FOUR of your players in the paint towards the offensive guard that's cutting towards the basket.
At the end of day, NBA 2K just needs to make defense great and responsive again (NBA 2K11) or stop handicapping the defense while boosting the offense.Last edited by ksuttonjr76; 07-30-2019, 09:37 AM.Comment

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
I think defense is op in this game. The only things imo that are in favor of the offense is paint defense, 50/50 balls and off rebounding. The on ball defense is to good imo.Psn: Alabamarob

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
It's easy to play cheesy defense in this game, but tougher to play legit defense.
What I mean is, it's easy to launch yourself at a player and do the lunging reach and slap the ball away...I dont play pg, but my friend has 7 steal games *no defense in archetype* all the time.
And same as in the paint.
It's easy to spam block over and over, and actually get rewarded. Meanwhile it's useless to use post moves except for hooks and shimmy hooks because they rarely are effected by that.
But as far as rotating and all that goes, you get beat by animations that slide you away or into bad positioning.
I have a ldd I play as sometimes, and I'm more so talking about defense as a non defensive build or without silver and up defensive badges.
It's not so much that you should expect to be a stopper with a bad defensive build...but being slid away by offensive animations shouldnt be a thing lol

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
It's a yearly thing since NBA 2K16 or NBA 2K17. The defense feels so FREAKING GREAT out of the box every damn year. Yes, it could be a case of players not being used to the "new" offense and gameplay. Whatever. Then comes the d*mn complaints.

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
Loved the feature where you could "click" whether you wanted to shade to the right, left, tight, loose, and moderate. I think that was in NBA 2K9 or 2K8. In a way, that indirectly addressed the sliding, because it still utilized the defensive assistance. However, you could control how strong you wanted the defensive assistance to be. Hell, I wish they would bring back the feature where you could flick the stick to cut off a driving lane. If you guessed right, you would force the ball handler to pick up the ball or fumble the ball for a possible on-the-ball steal.Comment

Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
I’ll say it again, 2k has to make defense as responsive as offense.
They also need to take out ankle breakers just because someone is spamming dribble moves on a stationary defender, suck in screens, and dribbling with no regard for the defensive player.
Something I’ve actually seen in this game is someone playing perfect defense around a screen while the pg spams dribble moves right into his chest then he gets sucked into the screen backwards, recovers, and gets his ankles broken while standing still.
Those things and the excessive body bumping have to go.
At least the rumor is that their focus was on getting back to basketball. Whatever that means to them.
They also said 2k19s focus was skills gap and look how that turned out. Smh.

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
That's my experience too but I haven't played that much online if at all. I find on ball defense way too strong. Arob wich sliders should I lower for both CPU and USER to make it more realistic?
I still see you from times to times blowing out users with your Hawks.Comment

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
I played myleague and Play Friends HOF. The defense to me was OP. I only used the Hawks and I had a top flight defense all year. The defensive ratings of my players are low, and I am an average defender at best. The fact that I could lock down with the Hawks was slightly disappointing. Kevin Huerter, Trae Young and Taurean Prince shouldn't ever be a part of a top defense in any world.Psn: Alabamarob

Re: Will NBA 2K20 fix defensive sliding?
Players also still slide into position when receiving passes without moving their feet. I've been harping on this for years! It's my biggest pet peeve with the game. I really hope they address foot planting across the board!Comment
