Can anyone kindly break it down how a patch needs 20 GB of storage ?

I just had to delete games from my HDD.
I only ever have to do this with 2K...

How can a patch to improve an alredy installed application be bigger than some standalone games ???

I expect a lot of content to be added for something this substantial, not just correcting issues..

I've literally never had this issue with a patch. Where I've had to delete things.

Are you under the impression that the patches just pile on top of each other creating one big file and deleting things in anticipation?

because that's not how it works.

      Correct.

The way I understand it is when downloading a patch for any game will basically request to reserve a certain amount of space on the HDD.The amount of actual data we get in a patch is not neccesarily the same as the amount the download requests to reserve; I think more often than not (in the case of huge 20+GB patches as we see here) it is actually much less.

Maybe you have more available storage but I could not begin downloading the patch until i deleted a game. At first i deleted a 8GB game and i still got the error...i wasnt until i deleted a big GB file (MK11) before it allowed me to update.

To simplify, the patches are unnecessarily too big.

When dealing with compressed data. It could be a small amount of the 35 GB that gets installed. And then it's free again. We do the same things for updates on our computer every time we update them. I'm you should be able to download your MK11 again.

But on the other hand, You should invest into an expandable HD. I have 8 TB drive hooked up to my PS4. I would say most of my games are on there. And 3 games stay on my PS4. FIFA, 2K and Spiderman.

I actually had to delete Spiderman and the DLC recently, so this is frustration piling up. Hopefully PS5 is backwards compatible and apps are more compressed.

edit: On general principle i just think 20gb is too much out the blue, even though i have unlimited internet.

Couldn’t tell you why, but’s it’s not as big a deal as some of you make it. My internet downloads a 30gb patch in like 40 mins... some of you just need better internet is what it really boils down too & an external hdd

This generation of gaming has taken a stepback data efficiency and latency wise.

I got you. I misunderstood where you were coming from.

Deleting MK11? Ugh. Couldn't do it. They actually had a patch today too, lol

I'm on pc and noticed this also. I think this is related to the consoles themselves

I think most people are upset if they have a data cap. On my internet plan, I get 2TB of data to use before I start paying for overage. I previously had a 1TB plan, but all the patches and updates from various games was killing that with ease.

20 Gb is ridiculous for a patch.

Especially since you need to download the entire 20GB and it probably only installs a very small part.

Has nothing to do with internet or HDD.
Few will have better internet then me so those that want to argue please dont.

It is a big deal. I have a 1tb data cap and they will charge if I go over. I also live in a big household with kids who also stream and play games online. Not to mention one is a content creator who regularly uploads videos to YouTube. Did I mention we have HBO Go, Netflix and Amazon prime? Yes it's a big deal to me.
