Why does 2k20 have so few animations?

So I was playing the updated NBA 2K11 the other day and I noticed something, driving to the rim actually felt satisfying and non-repetitive compared to 2K20.

I started investigating why I felt that way and started comparing the number of signature animations in each game and here's what i found(numbers may be off by 1 or 2):

    2K11 / 2K20

    Layups: 15 / 20

Runners: 34 / (Packaged with layups)

Running Hooks: 14 / (Packaged with layups)

Leaners: 20 / (Packaged with layups)

Running Floaters: 13 / (Packaged with layups)

    Dribble Pullups: 39 / 39

Fadeaways: 37 / (Packaged with dribble pull ups)

Running Fades: 13 / (Packaged with dribble pull ups)

    Spin Jumpers: 28 / 28

Running Spin Jumpers: 14 / (Packaged with spin jumpers)

    Post Hooks 50(!) / 5

    Post Fadeaways: 62 / 13

    Stepback jumpers: 26 / 42

Gathers: 31 / (Packaged with stepback jumpers/dribble moves)

    Contested Jumpers: 13 / 5

(couldn't figure out the formatting sorry)

I find it so ridiculous that an almost decade old game has more animations to choose from than the most recent one, not to mention that you can have different animations going left/right in 2k11.

It's so stale to drive in 2K20 because players use the same 5 layups every time and it feels like you're using a bunch of attributes/stats and not basketball players, same with passing/post play.

How have we come to the point where real life has more exciting/ridiculous moves than video games?
It's 2020 and we can't use Rondo's pass fake layup and fake shot, CP3's yo-yo dribble and between the legs fake, Trae Young's nutmeg, and so many more little things that actually make the game feel fun and fresh to play, a lot of things in this game are fixable with sliders/tendencies but the lack of animation variety has driven me to uninstall 2k20.

Same experience with NBA 2K14 right now for me.

    * Much more different layup animations. Every type of layup is viable in certain situations. Contact layups and fouls on it make a lot more sense.
*Contact dunks much smoother, no weird "speed up" and looks way more life like.
*Floaters actually got purpose and worth using, animations are fast and there is some cool animations that not anymore in the game.

Game not perfect, like every 2k got some annoyances, but just having more variety in stuff i can use and better responsiveness in input feel so good.

Few layup animations from 2k11 from my archives:

this is a side bar but i also hate how the sigs are way off. anybody check out devin booker? they really gave him the slasher dribble style and a jumper not even close to how he shoots.

This is my theory. The reason you have less animation is because they only have a certain amount of space. And I think remember I think they used the other space for the NBA dribble styles of all the other players. Just an idea.

Willing to bet it's because of all the dance, in-game, and walking emotes. It seems like there a hundreds of those. I know those are very popular with the kids but when I think of how many different signature animations could fill those spots I get a little depressed.

I’m my opinion the animations aren’t very realistic either. Playing with the classic spurs team the other night and while standing under the basket, Duncan dribbles between his legs before going up for a dunk. You’d never see that in a game

One thing I remember about 2k11 was the ability to assign two types of hook shots. Seemed like a right handed hook and a lefty. Something like that.

                  The neighborhood wasent that big.

With a limited amount of space, they had to make choices.

You used to be able to make a custom league with only 2 players and only 2 teams being able to do a fantasy draft.

After 2 games ago i stopped looking if it was back.

Same with playing a online private match.
You used to be able to set the line ups, defense match ups and such like in pno before the game started.

                  Its been long gone.

More of those things are gone in favor of myteam and my career stuff.

Not to mention everyone pretty much uses the same few animations anyways so i can see why they went with less.

Btw some are hidden behind ratings and badges as well....

I think Beluba said that a lot of the older animations didn't work with the animation blending and player motion systems.

Fair enough, its just very disappointing that there is so little to use from dribbling and layup animations in particular. The mo-cap of new animations is not as good looking either and doesn't match the sprint/gather speed and make player look like he launches into another dimension sometime.

This years layups look funny to me. I’ve never seen so many layups made without even touching the backboard lol

Animations may have something to do with difficulty levels tho

This has been a major issue with every 2K on this generation of consoles.

It forces you to warp Game Speed, Player Speed, Pass Speed offline to make finishing animations sync better with dribbling/running animations.

I don’t even know how online gamers play on defaults with a straight face. It’s borderline unplayable.

What doesn't help is that too many animations are tied to badges. If they were limited to ratings and signature styles then it would be much more balanced in my opinion.

What frustrates me the most is with these limited layup animations, the CPU can't even decide the correct animation in the right times. I watched CPU vs CPU and almost every layup that is blocked is blocked because the CPU decided to use the wrong hand (they always use the hand away from the basket). It kills me seeing skilled smart finishers like Kyrie, Kemba and Lebron to name a few, using the wrong hand going up for layups leading to the easiest blocks ever. Trae Young had 6 blocks one time from blocking dumb layup animations.
