I'm an old head who doesn't really spend a lot of time building stick skills anymore, but the shot aiming feature is the best change we've gotten to controls in a long time. I like the Madden vision cone analogy because it makes you think/act like a real player on the court. You have to time your gathers so much more carefully, the timing aspect is still there just like forming a jumper, and then holding the stick at the right angle feels just like the follow through of a jumper. I'm still only shooting ~30% from mid/3pt with players that aren't equipped with decent shooting badges but it's been more fun than just button mashing.
Madden vision cone was the only time anyone had to go through progressions in that series. It's been back to arcade mode since they got rid of the feature.
2K's shooting is going to stay in arcade mode unless they spend the time developing features like this. Hopefully they keep looking at ways to improve it and prevent exploits instead of going back to the easy shot stick timing feature.
They still have an issue with rewarding green timing too heavily in all modes. Shooting has been all or nothing with the aiming feature so far. If they can tune it so the split from white to green is more like 30%/60% instead of 20%/80%, then that's probably going to quiet the noise from most of the online crowd.
