However, green releases is still a guaranteed make even with shot aiming. How hard is it really to use the easiest shooting form to get green releases? Back in the day, you could have used the easiest form in the game, but it didn't mean that you could hit every shot under the sun with it.

Shot aiming alienated the group that relied mostly on creating good shot opportunities. Let's keep it 100%. The group with the mindset of "create the best shot available" is probably 2K's oldest crowd. We grew up with that concept, and that's all we know. I don't have the reflexes anymore to even use or adapt to shot aiming, but 2K made it relatively "harder" for me to score with the "normal" means.

Even in games that rely on fast twitch reflexes, I can still compete, because I can be "smart" about my in-game tactics. With NBA 2K, it feels like the dumber you are about good basketball spacing and shot creation, the more successful you are.
I have to disagree with the bolded, because that's my mindset as well. I want to create the best shot available. That's what I'm looking for, and that's actually why I think I like shot aiming as much as I do. Yeah, it's another thing to focus on, but it feels more natural than timing ever did. If I'm getting good shots in offensive rhythm, my target is easier to hit. It's actually an extra reward for what I was already doing, whereas I felt constantly penalized for finding good shots just because I didn't have "timing" down completely.

I don't disagree... but good luck getting the broader community to go along with that

That's why they need to separate the arcade approach in MyPlayer/MyTeam (let's give them tons of greens, high % and spectacular and almost inhuman moves LOL) from a more sim approach in MyNBA/MyLeague (without greens and all that stuff) ... I think that would be a way to content all of us...

I think that they should keep shot aiming, and aiming should still not cause a perfect release.

I actually think that perfect release should be a badge, that can only activate when you are on fire.

So if you get Curry, and he gets hot then you can keep him on fire with aiming for a few shots.

Green releases are trash, and compounds the defensive setting issues.

I guess I really do believe that they should take out shot aiming. As other people have stated, I really don't want to play a "mini game" while shooting, and I'm also in the camp that firmly believe that the shot aiming mechanic is causing an unnecessary delay or lack of response in the RS. I've been playing NBA 2K20 for most of this year, but played next-gen 2K21 for kicks and giggles for the past two days. The difference in the RS response is night and day to me, and I ABSOLUTELY hate that you mostly have to press down to shoot a jumper. By adding the shot aiming, they actually took away some control from the user if you utilized all the directions of the RS. Yes, I can (and have) turn off shot aiming, but that doesn't change the fact how the RS was reprogrammed overall. Even with it turned off, the game is basically "looking for it", but realizes "Oh, this user has it turned off.". It's crazy. I complain about not having the reflexes to adapt, yet I can notice those millisecond differences in the control.

The other reason why I think shot aiming is NOT necessary, because past NBA 2K shows that shot timing works when the game RESPECTS the quality of the shot, but wasn't OP due to the game RESPECTING good defense. Nowadays, the game only and ONLY respects the perfect release and badges. If you have neither, you're not scoring buckets.

I've always felt timing to be more of a "mini-game" than aiming ever was, but either way, you're not escaping the game within the game. Either it's matching up an upper "cue" or focusing and balancing the stick. For me, the latter feels way more true to life than worrying about milliseconds of timing. It's the first time I think I've ever thought even remotely similarly about shooting a basketball in 2k as I do when I'm in the gym pulling a three.
