I just finished watching the Redeem Team on Netflix and it got me thinking of the Kobe Era and how there were truly so many great players at that time coming into their own. And this is what I am talking about with my first post....I was all wrapped up in the Magic Bird Era with my '83 Sixers, but now I am dying to take a deep dive in the Kobe Era and try to get AI that elusive championship ring in Philly. But have to do it before the up and coming stars take over the league in a couple of years with Lebron, Wade, and Melo!!
Lol brother GOOD LUCK with that Iverson 76ers in the Kobe era. I'm trying to do that now - no 1st round draft picks and no one can create their own shot, but they do defend lol but with the Spurs the way they are, and the V. Carter's, McGrady's, Kobe's, Dirk's AND LeBron, Wade, Melo, Bosh coming in.... it's not looking good haha.

To tack on to this AMAZING thread - I think I've solved my dilemma as someone who's 35, growing up idolizing the 3peat Bulls but finding my love in the 2000s era: I'm going to create a player for the Magic/Bird era and play a roughly 15 year career, then by that age, "retire" and have my "son" make the leap to the NBA as a rookie and continue the course through the 2000s into near-modern day.

That way I can experience it all. Can't wait. Great thread brother!

Awesome thread, I had to register and reply.

I have spent countless hours on previous editions of NBA2K trying to use create-a-player and all-time teams to build a nostalgic experience that was a fraction as fun as what they've given us here.

I'm still enjoying the 1983-84 season - I took over a really fun Jazz team and traded John Drew to make sure none of my other players get hooked on coke while I make a run at the title

Curious to see how things go with the draft, since obviously I have the benefit of hindsight and presumably the computer GMs don't...would love to see the draft classes fleshed out with more realistic depth so that random new stars don't take over the league in a year or two.

But just an awesome gaming experience that is well worth the $$$.

Is there any way to use these during a game, with Spotify etc?

I'm an old head on here too - still playing on Xbox One. What system are you using?
Is "myERA" on Xbox One, or only on Series X?
So hard to find actual info on the game!
              Thanks

do you guys manage your team (budget, prospects, practice etc)? what kind of sliders you use?

any thoughts or u want to share about your Era?

I started playing a player specific and to my surprise after I was substituted...next thing I was in to the game!!! I dont need to play all the minutes only when my player is put in the game.... I an do an 82 game season and play everyone of them

Yea MyEra is definitely my favorite thing about this game. The fact that it comes with so many 80s, 90s, and 00s players means I can fool around and make all sorts of dream teams. Really the only thing that bugs me is I wish the CPU A.I. was better for opposing teams. Really irks me to try to play into the depth of these modes to see star players wind up living in free agency after a few years.

Still though great game for making teams and rosters to just play around with.

Ha! you are right about the '02 Sixers lol. I forgot how bad that team was put together. Started out 0-5 and thought it was fine because I wouldnt mind a high draft pick (dreams of drafting Melo to pair up with Iverson earlier in his career)...but then I realize I have no first-round draft pics (the 76ers 1st round draft pick goes to Boston in '03 and I definitely don't want to them to end up with Melo, or any other of the top incoming studs)...Ended up trading one for one of my favorite players growing up, Nick Van Exel (along with a Shawn Bradley return) for Derrick Coleman and Eric Snow (two of my most disliked sixers of all time lol). Now we will have one of, if not THE quickest backcourt in the league with Van Exel and Iverson. Should be interesting.

I had the same mindset but was going to snag D.Wade (rumors of Iverson going to my team Miami before he went to Denver). Then I realized I have no way of doing that without picks lmao. I like the Melo pairing - I was living in Denver during that run - WAS THERE IN HOUSE when they played the Durant Supersonics and they put up 169 points NO OVERTIME. It was absolute madness and really showed what type of firepower they had if it all came together.

Not sure what I'm going to do but I dig the Van Exel choice! That sounds like a damn blast lol.

I think as an older player (compared to these 17 year old kids), you are used to having more imagination because of the limited options growing up. Depending on your situation in life and the era you grew up in, you kind of played fairy tale sometimes to enjoy yourself as young one. I see with younger demo, they are used to having many options at their disposal because of tech and all and are a bit frustrated with certain things missing. With older players, we are kind of used to not having everything so widely available, so we make use of what we have to enjoy ourselves.

I say that to say, in the 1995 Offseason, the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies are on their way to the league. As with all expansion teams, there is an expansion draft.. with of course Expansion Draft protection players… I controlled all teams to oversee who is going and who is not, I don’t want players that are like dope superstars that didn’t play for Toronto or Vancouver getting selected… and that’s what happened.

Somehow, Penny Hardaway slipped and was selected by the Toronto Raptors for the first pick.. I was frustrated, but went into imagination mode and made a whole story in my head:

                          ORLANDO, FL – Jun 22,1995

Brian Hill woke up to a panic call early this morning by the John Gabriel, VP of Basketball Operations with these three words after he answered the call: “We forgot Penny”
Brian Hill: “Wait, what do you mean? Its 3 A.M in the morning?”
Gabriel: “Brian, We are going to lose him. We forgot to protect him. Penny isn’t in our the protected list”

That’s right, Magic Fans. Penny Hardaway is on his way to either Toronto or Vancouver as teams submitted their lists the other day.

“We had no plans to trade or even move Penny Hardaway. We were planning to extend him even further, it was a costly error on our part. Now we have to figure out how to stop him from actually playing in Canada” said Gabriel, in a press conference this afternoon. He has also stated that they have been in contact with both GMs and are currently working on a deal.

“Draft picks, they can have them. Whatever must be done to get penny back in a Magic shirt after the Expansion draft, we will do.”

Asked if they were willing to trade Shaq to bring Penny back, John Gabriel let out a hearty laugh before answering: “Our plan is to keep these two under lock and key. Shaq isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, this only forces our hand to make sure he is taken cared of before he becomes a free agent himself next year”

Man this game is crazy! Stay tuned for part 2!

I'm a 35yo married man to a wife of 30, my parents were 15 when they had me - my brother is 29, I have nephews and nieces and my grandparents were young as well. So I've always felt like I've had a good grasp of generational gaps when it comes to what's overblown and what's accurate.

But I will say, I distinctly remember when GTAIII and Tony Hawk Pro Skater came out, the minds of the basketball community were BLOWN. Filled with "WHAT IF there was a CITY we could ALL play in, run around, drive around, play on any street court or join groups and create our own player and have a career mode and create and play other teams online, etc.".

Now we've had that for years. We have skateboards and go-karts and dodgeball tournaments and a multitude of different courts to play on for different goals and different playstyles and build your own characters and positions and combo-positions.

And every year... it's "I don't want to ride a stupid skateboard or play dodgeball just give me basketball. I don't want to build a character just give me characters to choose from. I don't want to have a music career or have clothes to wear or show up for outside-basketball events. I don't care about having MyNBA ERA's added to the franchise mode I just want better generically made DRAFT CLASSES".

It drives me insane. We're complaining about all of the ADDED BONUS EXTRA'S we've all dreamed about one-day having (AND SO MUCH WE CAN EDIT OURSELVES TO OUR OWN HEARTS DESIRE) and instead of appreciating it, we just knock on what we don't "have" the way we WANT to have it in our own personal way. The fact that we have so much isn't enough.

On the other hand, yes, I'm fully aware it's 2022 and there's A LOT that I expected to be improved on in these games BY NOW (crowd reaction I'm looking at YOU). But also, holy hell just look at what huge limitations we had in 2K11, hell in 2K5 lmao.

I'll be on the forefront of "2K you've always sucked at accurate fouls per game, and offensive rebounding anti-user and pro-CPU it's just a facade you use to lower the CPU FG% from looking 70% because you forced them to miss to get an Off.Reb for a putback so now they're technically "47%FG" horses*** lol, what you call 'loose balls' are just an animation that allows the CPU to regather the ball and throw it to an open 3pt shooter for a 100% basket". Lol I have my grievances as far as coding since it's been in the game for decades.

But the sheer abundance of what the game allows you to do, the imagination, the creation, the features, the possibilities it provides is absolutely ONLY stunted by the player. And 2K23 is the shining example of the absolute MOST you could ever have and have ever done in a basketball game. Ever. There has never in any point in time, given and allowed so much in a basketball game as this basketball game. Ever.

I'm all for not letting a game company off-the-hook for exploitation or a lackadaisical effort for a title - but you hit the nail on the head when you said the abundance of options and possibilities limited by only your imagination has (for lack of a better word at the moment) 'spoiled' those to what we "don't" have, or have but not the way we "want" to have it. But as always keep pressing these companies for what you DO want in the way you WANT it, it only drives a better product when we get it

Brian Hill woke up to a panic call early this morning by the John Gabriel, VP of Basketball Operations with these three words after he answered the call: “We forgot Penny”
Brian Hill: “Wait, what do you mean? Its 3 A.M in the morning?”

With the flip of a coin, Toronto had the power to either have a higher seed in this years draft or to choose first in the expansion draft. With Penny Hardaway in the list of exposed players, they wanted a chance at the Eastern Conference champ.

“We are looking to compete. Not just to be here, we want our best chance to compete for the championship” says Isiah Thomas, president of the Toronto Raptors.
Before the draft, Isiah says he wants to challenge Vancouver on who can bring a title to the country of Canada first. “They will get a chance at picking first at some fresh new players from college and Europe. My goal is to lead a team to a championship first with someone that has been there before in some capacity, so it’s just different ways to approach.”

Stu Jackson, VP of basketball operations for the Vancouver Grizzlies, agrees that there are different ways to approach. “With this expansion draft, we have to look at it a bit different. We obviously know that there are some players that are wanted more than others but we must focus on the mental aspect. Who’s is a good leader for the team? Who can think through the long run?”

Up in the league offices in New Jersey, David Stern turned the attention to the selections of the new teams. Without hesitation, and with a little side eye, Penny Hardaway was selected with the first pick by the Toronto Raptors. “We have heard from Orlando about getting him back on their team, but at this moment we haven’t come to any agreement. We have spoken to Penny about his feelings and he wants to compete for the title like we do.” Said Thomas shortly after the draft.

Vancouver didn’t make as much splashes, but selecting BJ Armstrong with their first pick and sending him to Toronto for 3 future first round picks. “BJ has won titles and wants back at another one. His ultimate destination is to go to Orlando with Penny Hardaway as a one two combo. We want to wish him well” said Jackson of the Grizzlies soon after the trade.

Both are looking forward to the college draft with the likes of Joe Smith (Maryland), Antonio McDyess (Alabama), Damon Stoudimire (Arizona) and more. The Bullets pick first, with Spurs and Heat picking afterwards. Grizzlies and Raptors to follow.
